Position Overview
The Retina Surgical Application Specialist plays a critical role in supporting and training healthcare professionals-including surgeons, nurses, and technicians-on Bausch & Lomb retina technology. This includes the setup, programming, troubleshooting, and surgical case support for the Stellaris Elite PC system across hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and office-based surgical facilities. The role also encompasses expertise in ancillary Bausch & Lomb/Synergetics products such as forceps, laser probes, cautery, contact lenses, illumination systems, and other specialty devices.

Working closely with Retina Territory Managers, Regional Business Directors, and Ophthalmic Surgical Specialists, this position ensures seamless integration of Bausch & Lomb products into surgical workflows and supports ongoing sales initiatives.

Training & Education

  • Conduct onsite training for surgeons, nurses, and technicians in all surgical environments.
  • In-service (train) ophthalmic staff on company-manufactured medical device equipment, including laser, diagnostic tools, microkeratome, and calculation software.
  • Certify ophthalmic staff on company-manufactured medical device equipment after training during surgery observation and guidance.
  • Train ophthalmic staff on data collection, data collection software, and device upgrades.
  • Prepare and deliver educational presentations and "lunch and learn" sessions for customers or prospects.

Clinical Support

  • Provide real-time assistance during retina surgeries, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure optimal device performance for superior patient outcomes.
  • Offer applications support at conventions, user meetings, and during co-travel with sales or marketing teams.
  • Assist sales teams with clinical support to drive utilization and adoption.

Customer Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong clinical relationships with surgeons, technicians, and support staff.
  • Convey company marketing messages and technology updates to customers and prospects.

Administrative & Reporting

  • Complete application and in-service reports, complaint documentation, and expense reports according to company standards.
  • Manage weekly travel schedules, coordinate with service dispatch, and participate in conference calls.
  • Operate within a team budget for travel and training needs.

Continuous Learning

  • Attend product training and upgrade sessions at headquarters as needed.
  • Stay current on technology and industry trends through trade journals and internal education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, appropriate ophthalmic certification or a minimum of 4 years of cataract and/or refractive surgical experience.
  • Preferred experience; COA, C.O.T., C.O.M.T. with significant experience in retina surgery.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a pleasant, responsive attitude to be highly effective in a clinical teaching environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities to meet goals.
  • Highly motivated and results driven.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs.
  • Travel: Ability to travel extensively across a large geographic territory, including overnight stays.

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $85,000.00 and  $105,000.00.  The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/or long-term incentives. They may also be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, disability and life insurance,  a 401(k) plan and company match, a tuition reimbursement program (select degrees), company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others. U.S. based employees are also eligible to receive sick time, floating holidays and paid vacation.
