Position Summary: 

The Buyer is responsible for negotiating costs and procuring products within designated categories. This role collaborates closely with sourcing teams to provide guidance on product attributes and specifications, ensuring alignment with brand standards and business objectives. The Buyer plays a key role in vendor selection, cost optimization, and maintaining product quality, all while driving profitability and market competitiveness.  Provide guidance and direction to central sourcing teams regarding product attributes and specifications to ensure brand needs are met.

  • Negotiate costs with approved vendors to optimize value and maintain quality standards  

  • Achieve key procurement performance metrics, including:  

  • Service level targets 

  • Inventory turnover and dollar management 

  • Code date compliance and reduction of forced outs 

  • Buyer-adjusted account accuracy 

  • Minimization of buyer/distribution center (DC) loss 

  • Ensure timely and accurate purchase order execution to support supply chain continuity. 

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with replenishment, logistics, and merchandising teams to resolve operational issues and improve process efficiency. 

  • Monitor vendor performance and escalate recurring service failures to drive corrective action. 

  • Participate in regular on-site warehouse visits to:  

  • Strengthen collaboration and communication with warehouse operations team  

  • Evaluate product condition upon arrival, including quality, code dating and rotation practices  

  • Gain firsthand insight into handling, storage and distribution processes to inform better procurement decisions  

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying cost-saving opportunities and process enhancements. 

Planning and Execution 

  • Develop strong business relationships with warehouse team and vendors to deliver quality needs at best cost 

  • Develop accurate projected costs and item movement to pricing to support margin projections 

  • Support promotional planning to drive sales 

  • Analyze and create recommendations regarding item trends, seasonal updates, and product supply issues 

What You Will Bring: 

  • 1-3 years of retail buying experience, preferably in retail grocery 

  • Bachelor's degree in Merchandising, Supply Chain, or a related field (or equivalent experience) 

  • Experience working with large data sets and deriving actionable insights and recommendations, including those that have a financial impact 

  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint 

 Salary: 80,925 - $107,900

The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.  Additional factors considered in extending an offer include, but are not limited to, responsibilities of the role, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data and applicable law. 

This position will be on-site at the Giant Food Headquarters in Hyattsville, MD.
