Job description

Business Insider is hiring a weekend reporting fellow to cover trending business and tech news. The fellow would join a team covering the most compelling and impactful stories of the day on topics like the economy, the workplace, and AI
Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic, and always looking ahead. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider's three core values: We are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early-career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships are typically hybrid. We expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice a week. Remote roles would be considered for exceptional candidates.
The Role & Team:
The fellow would write news stories about the impact that technology, corporations, and the economy are having on workers and the average person, like how AI is upending the workforce, how data centers are affecting local communities, how inflation is making groceries less affordable, or how the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is affecting the prices of gas and plane tickets. Fellows may also write about business personalities, consumer trends, real estate, AI, and other innovations.
They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and interviewing - and regular fast-turnaround original reporting. Reporters may also pitch travel assignments, though travel is not required as a condition of employment.
This role requires working a Wednesday-Sunday schedule and reports to our Senior Weekend Editor on the Business News team.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Taking assignments from editors
  • Pitching story ideas, including original reporting
  • Sourcing up on assigned beats
  • Researching and conducting interviews
  • Covering breaking news
  • Updating existing coverage with new developments

The ideal candidate has:
  • An interest in covering the most compelling news from the world's biggest companies - and the rivalries and controversies that can result
  • A keen eye for impactful and potentially market-moving corporate news and how employees are reacting
  • A broad knowledge base spanning multiple industries and company types
  • A fundamental understanding of how corporations conduct business and grow
  • A nose for identifying any developments that seem unusual and out of the ordinary
  • A willingness to conduct cold outreach and quick interviews to advance news
  • Speed, close attention to detail and accuracy, and clean copy
  • Experience with original reporting and writing (school publications are great!)

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that's accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:
  • Fellows are paid $23 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you'd like some tips, check out our best practices guide.
