As a Senior Software Engineer at BMO, you will be a handson technical leader responsible for the design, development, and ownership of complex, enterprisegrade applications and services. You will lead endtoend technical solutions, guide teams through ambiguity, and ensure the delivery of secure, scalable, and businessaligned systems within a modern cloud and microservices ecosystem.

This role combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership, mentorship, and accountability for solution quality and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the design, development, and ongoing health of complex applications or services, taking accountability for technical quality, resiliency, and performance.
  • Lead endtoend technical design, translating business requirements into scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.
  • Design and build applications using Java and Spring Boot within a microservices and cloudnative architecture.
  • Lead and support application integrations using APIs, MQ, Kafka, and SFTP (RESTful services, JSON, XML).
  • Develop and optimize data solutions using Oracle SQL.
  • Use AIassisted tools to analyze large or complex codebases, identify technical debt, and assess crosssystem impacts during design, modernization, and change initiatives.
  • Apply AI to accelerate solution design exploration, architecture evaluation, prototyping, and test strategy improvement.
  • Leverage AI during complex production issue analysis, incident triage, and rootcause investigations to reduce mean time to resolution and improve system reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues, leading rootcause analysis and implementing longterm fixes.
  • Set and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing (SIT/UAT), security, performance, and SDLC best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers across coding standards, solution design, testing practices, and modern engineering approaches.
  • Mentor and guide engineers on the effective, responsible, and judicious use of AI throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Guide teams through technical ambiguity, helping define direction, tradeoffs, and implementation approaches.
  • Collaborate with business partners, architects, and product teams to ensure solutions are aligned with business priorities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and delivery practices.

Leadership & Ownership Expectations

  • Demonstrated ownership of applications or services, with the ability to clearly explain what was built, your role, and the business and technical impact delivered.
  • Experience setting clear expectations for development quality, delivery timelines, and engineering best practices.
  • Proven ability to influence technical decisions and raise the bar for team performance, system quality, and operational excellence.
  • Experience working in enterprise environments; banking or financial services experience preferred.
  • Ability to set the standard for responsible AI usage, including adherence to data privacy, security, and regulatory compliance expectations.

Required AI Capabilities

  • Handson experience using AIassisted coding or developer productivity tools, such as Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools, in daytoday development workflows.
  • Strong judgment and accountability in reviewing, validating, and refining AIgenerated code, designs, and technical recommendations to ensure correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Solid understanding of responsible, ethical, and secure AI usage in an enterprise environment, including data privacy, intellectual property protection, regulatory considerations, and secure software development practices.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, with a related postsecondary degree or equivalent experience.
  • Handson experience delivering production systems in large, complex enterprise environments.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Technical Skills

  • Languages & Frameworks: Java, Spring Boot
  • Architecture: Microservices, distributed systems
  • Integration: APIs, MQ, Kafka, SFTP; REST, JSON, XML
  • Databases: Oracle SQL
  • Cloud: AWS (EC2, EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS, Redshift, Bedrock)
  • SDLC & Testing: Full SDLC ownership, SIT/UAT

AI & Cloud Experience

  • Recent AI / GenAI experience (within the past 3 months) using AI to solve real technical or business problems, including:
    • AIassisted code analysis, refactoring, and technical debt assessment
    • AIenabled design exploration, prototyping, and test strategy improvement
    • AIsupported production issue investigation and rootcause analysis
  • Experience integrating AI/ML/GenAI tools or consuming AI services and APIs (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude).
  • AWS experience within the past 12 months, including deploying, hosting, and supporting applications in AWSbased environments.

Work Model

  • Hybrid - 2-3 days per week in office

Salary:

$75,900.00 - $141,900.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.
