SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVERS
HOURLY RATE:  $16.19 while training


JOB OBJECTIVE:  To provide safe, orderly and efficient transportation services.
POSITION OVERVIEW:  Substitute Bus drivers drive the bus as needed and assure a safe and orderly ride.  They pre-inspect the vehicle before each trip and assure the maintenance concerns are addressed.  They fuel the bus and maintain cleanliness on the bus.  They may assist students with seating, assistive devices, safety and behavioral concerns.  They provide direction to the bus aide, both during routine activities and during emergencies.  Drivers communicate issues and relay information between teachers, families, students and members of the general public on a daily basis. 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 
General:
  • Follow all established policies, practices, and procedures in terms of duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Enjoy working with children of all ages and be sensitive to their needs.
  • Able to understand and have empathy for persons with disabilities.
  • Must establish and maintain effective communication with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain a cooperative, harmonious relationship with professionals and others within the school setting which fosters recognition and respect for every individual.
  • Works cooperatively with Transportation Supervisor, Building Principals and/or Administrative team to resolve student and parent issues with the least disruptive alternative to the education of the student.
  • Perform such tasks as the supervisor may request in order to promote cooperative team work.
  • Employee will follow all health and safety rules, policies and procedures.
  • Perform duties according to the district safety and health policies.
  • Must be neat, clean and dress appropriately.
  • Display professional behavior when working with students, families and co-workers and others in the community.
  • Have knowledge of common safety hazards and necessary safety precautions for self and others, sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment.  Ability to use the principles of safety and to perform skills protecting the health and safety of self, students, and co-workers.
  • Must be physically able to perform CPI (Crisis Intervention) techniques, lifting and positioning students.
Specific:
  • Safely operate all types of vehicles used to transport pupils and perform successfully as a driver.
  • Follow assigned schedules and routes unless permission received from supervisor.
  • Perform a pre-trip inspection prior to each run.
  • Understand mechanical functions of a school bus and report vehicle defects using the established form.
  • Follow district policies regarding reporting of accidents and/or incidents. 
  • Have knowledge of local, state and federal rules, regulations, ordinances and laws regarding school bus operation.  Obey all state and federal laws.
  • Follow all procedures, policies and directives of the district.
  • Keep work area in a neat organized manner.  Keep district vehicles clean inside and out.
  • React appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Assist with medical and behavior problems.
  • Assure that students get on and off the bus in a safe and orderly fashion.
  • Report inappropriate behavior to supervisor using the designated form.
  • Interact effectively with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.
 JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  •  Must be 18 or older, possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be in possession of, or able to obtain within 60 days, a CDL license with a B, P, and S classification and Air Brake endorsements.  Must have successfully completed all necessary training to be a certified bus driver.
  • Must be able to pass the MDE physical annually.
  • Meet and maintain district and MDE competency levels of driving skills.
  • Meet district and MDE standards of past driving performance.
  • Meet federal DOT drug/alcohol testing requirements.
  • Must agree to a yearly check of driving record.
  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license at all times.
 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  •  Must be able to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds such as students.
  • Must be able to open emergency door on the bus.
  • Must be able to lift the hood of the bus for pre-trip inspection.
  • Must be able to squat, kneel and reach to inspect under bus for pre-trip inspection.
  • Employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
 WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time restraints and interact with the public and other workers.  The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well being of others.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.

PROHIBITIVE MEDICATIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Opiods: Also known as narcotic analgesics.  Used to treat pain.  Examples include morphine, codeine, OxyContin (oxycodone), Vicodin (hydrocodone) and Demerol (meperidine).
Central nervous system depressants:  Commonly used to treat anxiety, panic attacks, and sleep disorders.  Examples are Nembutal (pentobarbital sodium), Valium (diazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam).
Central nervous system stimulants: Commonly used to treat sleeping disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.  Examples include Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine).
