Job description

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
A Duneland School Corporation bus aide is required to assist in the transporation of all special students needing additional attention.  This must be done in a safe and lawful manner.  This position has a highly responsible role in transporting and dealing with students, parents and staff on a regular basis.  Bus aides interact with individuals both inside and outside of the corporation and therefore, must have the ability to present a professional and organized image at all times.
Starting hourly rate:
$17.00
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Is at least twenty-one (21) years of age; complete and maintain a valid Physical Fitness Certificate; have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); and have one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:








  1. Assist students requiring help to load or unload the bus
  2. Secure special needs student and/or equipment with restraints, tie downs (e.g. wheelchairs, seat belts, car seats etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students
  3. Store and secure all student equipment that is to be transported
  4. Constantly monitor student's well-being and behavior during the route
  5. Prepare documentation (e.g. incident reports, student misconduct) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information
  6. Respond appropriately to student's needs during the route and notifiy the driver if an emergency exists
  7. Provide First Aid only as trained and required by the situation
  8. Sit where needed on the bus and remain seated while bus is in motion
  9. Observe safety and security procedures
  10. Use and maintain equipment and materials properly
  11. Assist the driver in keeping the bus clean and sanitary
  12. Assist in pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, including wheelchair lifts
  13. Be familiar with the route in order to assist a substitute or new driver
  14. Attend all in-service training
  15. Conduct emergency evacuation from bus, including exiting from the emergency door and may also require removal of disabled student from bus
  16. Cooperate and communicate with school personnel, parents and students in an efficient and friendly manner
  17. Accept all delegated authority
  18. Exhibit appropriate role modeling through language, dress and hygeine
  19. Perform all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (includes equipment, hours, physical demands)
Work Environment:  This position typically works in a school bus setting with a controlled temperature environment.  Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions may occur.
Equipment:  This position is required to maintain a working knowledge of all transportation vehicles and equipment used to aid in the loading and unloading of students.  A basic knowledge of operating computers, printers, telephone systems, and copiers is also required.
Hours:   This position is typically expected to work an average of 4 to 6 hours per school day.  Summer hours will be adjusted as authorized by the Superintendent to assure adequate coverage throughout the summer school period.  Evening or weekend activities may be scheduled as necessary.  This position may require occasional travel to other states and communities.
Physical Demands:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by all Duneland School Corporation bus aides to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.  The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or carry from 40-60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or carry or move up to 100 pounds. 
Duneland School Corporation bus aides must obtain a Certificate of Completion of a physical examination:










  1. Sufficient physical ability to be a school bus aide, as determined by the State School Bus Committee
  2. Possession and full normal use of both hands, both arms, both feet, both legs, both eyes and both ears
  3. Freedom from a communicable disease that:
  4. May be transmitted through airborne or droplet means
  5. Requires isolation of the infected person
  6. Freedom from any mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease, which might impair the person's ability to properly respond to student needs.
  7. Visual acuity, with or without glasses, of at least 20/40 in each eye and a field of vision with 150-degree minimum and depth perception of at least 80%.
  8. Meet all requirements of law and administrative agencies governing the qualification and performance of Indiana school bus aides
  9. Must demonstrate the ability to climb and descend the bus service door steps in a forward facing position two (2) times without stopping
  10. Will be responsible for operating the wheelchair lift and securing the wheelchairs in the bus.
  11. Perform all other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
