Job description

School Bus Driver

Compensation: The base hourly rate of pay ranges from $22.42 to $25.47/hour. An additional $3.00/hour bonus will be added to the hourly rate of pay between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027, for an increased hourly rate of $25.42 to $28.47.

Job Purpose Statement:

The job of "School Bus Driver" is done for the purpose of transporting students over scheduled routes and special excursions; enforcing rules, regulations, and laws to maintain safety during transport; ensuring vehicle is in a safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses. Some assignments are for Relief drivers, meaning filling in for an absent route driver.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Drives school buses for the purpose of safely transporting students over scheduled routes and special excursions; may drive bus to deliver items to students and families
  • Assesses potential emergency situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well being of passengers
  • Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe ingress and egress from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport
  • Attends training for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements for school bus certificate
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior/exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle
  • Directs students regarding safety for the purpose of enforcing rules, regulations, laws and safety; enforces safety protocols and procedures on buses
  • Informs school personnel of practices and incidents (e.g. rules, regulations, laws, procedures) for the purpose of providing information for follow up action and proper procedures
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (i.e. brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition
  • Maintains regular and appropriate attendance and is on time for assignments for the purpose of meeting the needs of the students and the district.
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and conveying information

Other Job Functions:

  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Fuels assigned vehicle for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Experience Required: Prior bus driving experience preferred, however, not required. HRCSD will provide training for individuals who are willing to work as a member of a team, who possess a positive attitude and strong work ethic and have the ability to readily obtain a Bus Driving certification and Commercial Driver's License.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

  • Skills to operate school buses in a safe manner, communicate effectively in a friendly manner, maintain a welcoming environment on the bus, evaluate schedules and meet deadlines, plan and organize activities, administer first aid. Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of vehicle operation, basic maintenance requirements, driving codes and district safety requirements.
  • Abilities to sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, work independently, make common sense decisions in potentially critical situations, remain calm in stressful situations. Significant physical abilities include climbing/balancing, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/visual accommodation. Ability to install tire chains during inclement weather.

Education Required: High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License and evidence of insurability, possess and maintain a School Bus Driver's Certificate, and obtain/maintain First Aid Certificate.

Required testing:

  • Drug screening tests for any illegal drug or substance classified in Schedules I through V under the Federal Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. 811 to 812. This includes, but is not limited to, marijuana, mind-altering substances or narcotic drugs such as hallucinogens, amphetamines, barbiturates, or any other illegal drug or controlled substance, except those federally recognized as legally prescribed by a physician and used as directed.
  • Post-offer bus driver physical.
  • Nationwide criminal history verification - a background check for any convictions directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the position. Unless otherwise required by law, only job-related convictions will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the applicant from employment.
  • Sexual misconduct reference check with prior K-12 educational employers.
