Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Transit Services Manager or designee, this entry-level position requires performing bus driver duties in the Transit Services Department. The incumbent must be able to drive a bus over an assigned route according to schedule in a safe and courteous manner. The incumbent must also be able to collect fares from passengers, prepare daily passenger reports, and do related work as required.

Representative Duties

โ€ข Must be able to meet the physical, mental, and environmental requirements identified in this job description โ€ข Operate a variety of communications equipment, including copy machines, telephones, fax, email, Internet and other various computer systems โ€ข Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports, forms, memorandums, correspondence, and records using correct sentence structure, grammar, and spelling concerning accidents, breakdowns, mechanical defects, etc. โ€ข Respond to requests for information from the public, City departments and outside agencies โ€ข Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, the public, and other agencies with which the department interacts โ€ข Drive with regard to safety and comfort of passengers and to the maintenance of time schedules โ€ข Drive a bus over an assigned route and on schedule โ€ข Answer questions regarding routes and time schedules concerning the Pass Area bus lines and connecting lines to the Riverside Transit Authority โ€ข Collect fares and keeps records of amounts collected and distances traveled โ€ข Prepare a daily cash report of money turned in, fare box readings, and other related information โ€ข Maintain radio contact with the dispatchers on assignments and status โ€ข Perform dispatching and office duties on an as needed basis

Qualifications

โ€ข Knowledge of safety principles and regulations applicable to bus operations, including the California Vehicle Code and local city traffic regulations โ€ข Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of buses โ€ข Ability to operate a large passenger bus effectively and safely โ€ข Ability to keep simple records and make reports โ€ข Deal courteously with passengers and the public โ€ข Ability to perform arithmetic computations โ€ข Ability to work independently with little direction and minimum supervision โ€ข Demonstrate operational characteristics of standard office equipment โ€ข Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, rules and regulations โ€ข Possess effective interpersonal skills, using tact, patience and courtesy โ€ข Use sound professional judgment in the application of policy, procedures, and laws in situations arising in the course and scope of employment. โ€ข Perform routine multi-tasking functions โ€ข Understand and work within the course and scope of duties, authority and responsibilities โ€ข Relate effectively to people of a variety of cultures, languages, disabling conditions and socioeconomic situations โ€ข Analyze situations and apply departmental rules and regulations effectively, as well as common sense where no guidelines are readily available

Experience, Education and Licenses

โ€ข Minimum twenty-one (21) years of age โ€ข Must possess a high school diploma from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent โ€ข Must possess a valid California Class B Driver's License โ€ข Must obtain Air and Brake and Passenger Endorsements within thirty days of employment and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment โ€ข Must obtain a Vehicle Transit Training certificate within thirty days of employment and maintain possession of such certificate during the course of employment โ€ข Must obtain a DMV medical examiner's certificate within thirty days of employment and maintain possession of such certificate during the course of employment โ€ข One (1) year of experience as a general passenger bus driver desired โ€ข Must have an acceptable driving record, be insurable at standard rates by City's insurance carrier, and maintain such insurability during the course of employment. Physical, Mental, and Environmental requirements: Must be found to be free from any physical, emotional or mental conditions, as determined by a qualified physician and/or psychologist, which with or without accommodation might affect the ability of the employee to perform essential job functions. The position may require prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. Additionally, the position requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination. Near and far vision is required in order to read work related documents and perform bus driving related duties. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Incumbent must be willing to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
