Engadine Consolidated Schools is seeking a certified Bus Driver, starting with the 2025-2026 school year (approximately August 25, 2025) 

TITLE: Bus Driver

 

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director/Superintendent

 

JOB FUNCTION: Able to drive bus routes, transport children to and from school, maintain safety requirements and follow traffic laws
 

 

DISTRICT DESCRIPTION: Engadine Consolidated Schools is located in western Mackinac County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, approximately 40 minutes east of Manistique, 20 minutes southest of Curtis, 45 minutes west of St. Ignace and 20 minutes south of Newberry. We are a small school district with a K-12 population of approximately 260 students, comprising the communities of Engadine, Gould City, Naubinway, Epoufette and Rexton areas and bordered by beautiful Lake Michigan on the south, farming country with a sizable Amish population to the north and numerous forests, lakes and countryside. The famed Hiawatha Sportsman Club is located centrally within our district. ECS is a tight knit community with an excellent teaching and support staff and we are looking for energetic individuals to join our team. Average class sizes range from 20-25 students. A comprehensive medical, vision and dental plan, plus retirement benefits, are offered.
 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  • Be able to drive morning and afternoon routes, transporting children
  • Maintain cleanliness of bus
  • Maintain credentials and certifications
  • Follow driving requirements, such as inspecting bus
  • Obey traffic laws
  • Be able to drive in incelement weather
  • Work with school officals
  • Be willing to drive additional trips, as need (eg. filed trips, sports trips, etc.)
  • All other duties, as assigned
 

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Applicant must be a certified school bus driver in the State of Michigan holding a CDL Commercial Drivers License with a School Bus Endorsement.
Engadine Consolidated Schools will pay for training costs for qualified candidates to become a Bus Driver.


 

 

To become a certified school bus driver in Michigan, you need a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a school bus endorsement and to complete a Beginning School Bus Driver (BSBD) training program, which includes 18 hours of instruction. 
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a School Bus Endorsement: 


 
  • Requirements:
    • Pass a written knowledge test. 
    • Show documentation of proof of Legal Presence in the United States. 
    • Submit a driving record check. 
    • Have a valid Medical Examiner's certificate. 
    • Pass a vision test. 
    • Have a valid Michigan driver's license. 
    • Be 18 years of age or older. 
  • Process: Start by obtaining a Commercial Learner's Permit from the Michigan Secretary of State. 
  • Endorsement: You'll need to obtain the "S" endorsement for school buses. 

2. Complete the Beginning School Bus Driver (BSBD) Training Program:
  • Instruction:
    This program typically involves 18 hours of instruction, often offered in the evenings over 5 nights or during the daytime over 5 days. 
  • Content:
    The training covers various aspects of school bus driving, including safety, student management, and route knowledge. 
  • Prerequisites:
    Enrollees must complete a physical exam, driver's license check for points, complete a criminal records check, and review the first six lessons of the School Bus Driver Training Program. 
  • Ongoing Training:
    Michigan mandates a 6-hour School Bus Driver Continuing Education safety course for all school bus drivers to be completed within two years after entry-level Beginning Bus Driver Certification, as well as each succeeding two years thereafter. 

3. Ongoing Requirements:
  • Physical Exams: Drivers must pass a physical exam and remain current during the time parameters of their medical certificate.
  • Drug/Alcohol Testing: School bus drivers are subject to random drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Safety Meetings: Drivers may be required to attend safety meetings.
  • Continuing Education: Drivers must remain current with the latest laws and trends that are applicable to them. 
 


Pay begins at $21.02/hr and options of insurance and other benefits exist.
