Job description

PAY RANGE:

$25.00 - $27.00 Hourly

HOURS/AVAILABLE LOCATIONS:
Between the hours of 1:00pm-3:00pm (15-20 hours a week)

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Bus Driver works with program directors, group leaders, caregivers, and supervisors to safely transport children and staff in YMCA buses and to maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Drives 14-passenger buses for participant and/or staff pick up and drop offs.
  2. Works as a team to develop transportation plans that ensure all participants are picked up and dropped off on time while being mindful of staffing needs.
  3. Ensures all relevant paperwork is completed and filed for all bus runs.
  4. Ensures that all required equipment and supplies are available and present on the bus.
  5. Completes required pre and post inspections and aligned paperwork.
  6. Performs visual checks; walking all the way to the back of the bus to ensure no participant is left behind each time a group exits the bus.
  7. Checks in with supervisor to ensure all paperwork is in accordance with YMCA bus-regulations.
  8. Remains observant of any situations while driving that could become a health and/or safety concern for self and passengers.
  9. Fosters an environment that is a positive experience for participants.
  10. Follows all procedures and standards as established by the law and the Y.
  11. Creates a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth.
  12. Assists group leaders, caregivers, and/or supervisors with the on-boarding/off-boarding process.
  13. Attends and participates in staff meetings and staff training.
  14. Adheres to policies, standard operating procedures, and handbooks related to boundaries with youth.
  15. Participates and attends all required abuse risk management training.
  16. Adheres to standards & procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
  17. Reports any suspicious, inappropriate behaviors and policy violations to the supervisor immediately and complies with mandated YMCA and State of Hawaii abuse reporting requirements.
  18. Reinforces staff and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  19. Responds seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors, and responds quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Level I (entry level):
    • Minimum 21 years of age is required.
    • Current Driver License with at least 3 years of driving experience required.
    • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.
    • TB clearance required.
    • Bus Driver’s certification required within 3 weeks of hire, which include a valid driver’s license, clean driver’s history, passing of the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam, drug testing, and criminal background check.
    • Random drug tests after the first initial drug tests required.
    • Complete a minimum of 10 hours of practice driving with and without children and during the day and evening hours with a current certified bus trainer.
    • Attend initial and annual DOT Bus Driver Training.
    • Complete and pass “Coaching the Van Driver” video and test.
    • Complete and pass a road test with a designated bus trainer.
    • Reliable transportation to and from the assigned location is required.
    • Complete mandatory trainings (such as orientation, child management, child abuse prevention, basic health & safety, etc - a complete list of mandatory trainings will be provided) within the first 3 months of hire required.
    • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Level II (in addition to the Level I qualifications above):
    • One year or more of documented experience in driving 14-passenger buses.
    • Assists with bus driver trainings as needed.
