Job Summary
The Substitute Bus Driver operates a passenger bus to transport Anchorage School District students along a designated route.
Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Be 21 years of age and meet all other requirements for school bus drivers as set forth by state regulations.
  3. If given a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment before placement in the position. Click here to view the physical capacities requirements for this position.
  4. Pass the paid training course provided by the ASD Transportation Department and obtain the required Alaska commercial driver's license (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements. ASD will assist with the cost of obtaining the license.

The following are preferred:
  1. Previous experience with large displacement vehicles.
  2. Knowledge of Alaska state laws and regulations pertaining to school bus operation.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Practices safe and defensive driving techniques and maintains both a good driving record and a valid Alaska commercial driver's license.
  2. Operates passenger busses over a designated route according to an established time schedule, potentially during extremely hazardous weather and road conditions.
  3. Stops at designated points to pick up or drop off students of all ages.
  4. Assists special needs students on and off the bus.
  5. Transports students on special activity events and field trips.
  6. Maintains order on the bus by effectively conveying instructions or explanations and enforcing rules, sometimes during difficult circumstances.
  7. Completes student conduct reports and cites students for disciplinary action in case of extreme or repeated unruliness. Reports and discusses serious disciplinary and unsafe acts of students with principal.
  8. Learns the geographical location of fire and emergency aid stations and follows designated emergency first aid procedures when needed.
  9. Interprets and follows verbal and written instructions and writes reports.
  10. Checks vehicle for proper maintenance and safety and reports equipment malfunction.
  11. Files accident reports when necessary.
  12. Keeps trip records and conducts passenger counts.
  13. Maintains bus in clean and orderly condition.
  14. Operates two-way radio to communicate with other busses and central dispatch station.
  15. Promotes and maintains good public relations.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
