Job purpose:
  • In keeping a tradition of excellence, the purpose of the Monitor Minibus is to assist the minibus driver when requested or required. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist students requiring help to load or unload the bus
  • Actively assist the driver when backing the bus
  • Constantly monitor students' well-being and behavior during the route
  • Respond appropriately to students' needs during the route and notify the driver if an emergency exit
  • Be familiar with the route in order to assist a substitute or new driver
  • Assist the driver in keeping the bus clean
  • Safely secure all wheelchair students
  • Store and secure all student equipment that is to be transported with restricts, tie downs (e.g. wheelchairs, seat belts, care seats, wheelchair tray, etc)
  • Sit where needed on the bus but not behind the driver unless the bus is empty
  • Complete a walk-through for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all students (no student or book bag left on bus)
  • Assist with conducting emergency evacuation drills for the purpose of ensuring efficiency of procedures and complying with mandated requirements
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of safely transporting students
  • Make sure students do not undo their seat belts and leave their seats while the bus is moving
  • Prevent students from fighting, being verbally abusive, self-abusive or behaving in ways that could create disorder on the bus and threaten the safety of other students
  • Report observations and/or incidents (discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior, etc.) to the transportation supervisor
  • Lead and attend staff meetings/trainings as applicable; serve on staff committees
  • Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use
  • Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Regular, dependable, in person, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position
  • Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy
  • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all other District, State and Federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by RCSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct
