What is a bullpen?

A bullpen job typically refers to a shared workspace where employees, such as sales representatives, stock traders, or journalists, work in an open office setting without individual cubicles. It encourages collaboration, quick communication, and a dynamic work environment. The term is also used in baseball to describe the area where relief pitchers warm up before entering a game, which metaphorically translates to a team of employees ready to step in when needed.

What is it like to work in a bullpen environment, and how does the team structure influence daily responsibilities?

Working in a Bullpen environment typically means collaborating closely with a group of professionals in an open, fast-paced workspace. The team structure encourages frequent communication and the sharing of real-time information or ideas, whether you're in sales, finance, or a creative field. Daily responsibilities often include team-based problem-solving, quick decision-making, and supporting colleagues in achieving shared goals. This setup can be energizing and fosters professional growth through direct mentorship, but it also requires you to adapt to changing priorities and stay proactive in a dynamic setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the bullpen position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Bullpen position, commonly found in environments like sales, trading desks, or creative agencies, you need strong teamwork, multitasking, and communication skills, often supported by relevant industry knowledge or degrees. Familiarity with CRM systems, trading platforms, or project management tools is beneficial depending on the specific bullpen role. Adaptability, resilience, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members are standout soft skills. These abilities are crucial to managing fast-paced workflows, meeting deadlines, and contributing positively to the team's performance.

Job description

Most agencies want to hire a producer. We want to hire the person who builds the producers.

This is not a seat where you grind someone else's leads forever and hope for a title someday. This is the sales function you own it. You'll start by selling, because you should never ask someone to do what you haven't done here. But within 90 days you'll be recruiting, onboarding, and coaching producers underneath you, and you'll be paid an override on every policy they write for as long as they're on your team. The owner is not going to be your day-to-day manager he's building the technology and the strategy. Sales is yours.

The unfair advantage: we don't cold call. We built our own AI outbound and appointment-setting platform. It works our book and our lists, has the conversation, books the appointment, and warm-transfers live calls to your team. That means your producers don't prospect they show up to a calendar that's already full. You're not managing a bullpen of people fighting call reluctance, because the hardest, most demoralizing part of building a sales team is already solved. And you can scale your team faster than anyone you've worked for, because lead volume isn't your constraint headcount is. Most policies quote and bind in seven minutes or less, and you'll have an existing book to cross-sell and round out, a modern CRM, and real quoting tools.

We're a lean, tech-forward Farmers agency in the Houston / Clear Lake area. We got tired of the old agency model cold calling, churn, burnout so we built software to fix it, and we run our own agency on it. We're looking for one person to own sales and grow with us as we scale. If you've ever thought "I could run a sales team better than the people I've worked for," this is where you get to prove it and get paid on it. Our values: honesty, education, and personalized service for our clients and for our team.

This is NOT for you if:

You want to be handed leads and left alone (we have a different posting for that apply to it, we'd love to have you)

You want a management title without carrying a personal number

You need someone standing over you telling you what to do this week

Compensation: Draw / base while you ramp (you are not eating ramen for six months). Personal commission, uncapped, on everything you write. Team override on every policy your producers write this is the real money, and it compounds. Plus performance incentives on team and life production. Realistic Year 1: $75K$150K. Year 2 with a fully built team: meaningfully higher. The override is the whole point. We'd rather pay you a lot because you built something than pay you a little to be another set of hands.

Benefits

Annual Base Salary + Commission + Bonus Opportunities

Paid Time Off (PTO)

Mon-Fri Schedule

Responsibilities

First 90 days establish yourself:

Work warm transfers and booked appointments; write personal business

Learn our carriers, our book, and our tech

Help tune the AI dialer's scripting and appointment quality based on what you hear on live calls

Day 90 forward build the team:

Recruit, interview, and hire producers

Onboard, train, and coach them to production

Set activity standards, run the pipeline, and hold the team accountable to number

Own the sales forecast and report on it

Keep writing personal business you're a player-coach, not a spectator

Partner with the owner on which markets and products we push next

Requirements

Active Texas P&C and/or Life & Health license

You have actually recruited, hired, trained, or coached salespeople before formally or informally

You've carried a number yourself and hit it

You want to build a team not "would be open to it someday." You want it.

Comfortable working hybrid, self-directed, organized

Fluent with CRM and modern sales tools

Strongly preferred:

Insurance agency experience (captive or independent)

Experience running a phone sales floor or inside sales team

Experience with AI, dialers, or automated lead systems or genuine enthusiasm to learn
