What are some common challenges faced by building systems engineers when working on retrofit projects in existing structures?

Building Systems Engineers often encounter unique challenges during retrofit projects, such as integrating modern systems with outdated infrastructure and ensuring compliance with current codes. Limited access to existing mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems can complicate upgrades, requiring creative problem-solving and collaboration with architects and contractors. Additionally, balancing energy efficiency improvements with budget constraints and minimizing disruptions to occupants are key considerations that demand both technical expertise and strong communication skills.

What is building systems engineering?

Building Systems Engineering is a multidisciplinary field focused on the design, integration, operation, and maintenance of a building’s essential systems, such as HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), electrical, plumbing, and fire protection. Engineers in this field ensure that these systems work together efficiently to provide comfort, safety, sustainability, and functionality within buildings. They collaborate closely with architects and construction professionals to meet regulatory standards and optimize building performance. Building Systems Engineers play a key role in improving energy efficiency and supporting green building initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building systems engineer?

To thrive as a Building Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification (such as PE or EIT). Familiarity with building automation systems, HVAC, AutoCAD, and energy management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills enable you to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and ensure system reliability. These competencies are crucial for designing, maintaining, and optimizing safe, efficient building environments.

What is the difference between Building Systems Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business. A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight. Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team
Join the Compute Platform Systems Team, where we provide systems engineering to enable component development and integration alongside cybersecurity and functional safety leadership for components and platform integration. Your role will make significant impacts on the future of trucking and autonomous technology as we look to Drive the Future of Freight. We are currently seeking a Functional Safety Systems Engineer who is enthusiastic about thriving in a hands-on environment and ready to grow with the team.
What You'll Do
The Functional Safety Systems Engineer on the Compute Platform Systems team will be responsible for providing functional safety systems engineering analysis, assessments, and collaboration to help establish a functional safety case for our autonomous truck. This role will be working across teams involved with development and commercialization of software, hardware, and infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with Sensors and Base Hardware teams to progress safety analysis and deliverables with automotive Tier-1 suppliers.
  • Maintain requirements databases using both DOORS and Jama, ensuring accuracy and traceability.
  • Develop verification and validation strategies against safety requirements by collaborating with the Component Enablement team.

What You'll Need to Succeed
