Job Summary
Provides leadership and oversight for building service operations within University Housing. Plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of building service personnel; ensures adherence to cleaning, safety, and operational standards; manages staffing, training, and resource activities; and promotes a collaborative and customer-focused work environment. Reviews operational effectiveness and implements improvements to support departmental goals and service expectations. Supervisors engage in and implement University Housing's inclusion, culture and climate initiatives.Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership and Personnel Management
  • Controls and schedules the work of personnel assigned to building service activities.
  • Ensures employees receive instruction and training in cleaning methods and operating techniques and departmental procedures.
  • Approves timecards and attendance records.
  • Completes performance evaluations of Building Service Forepersons in assigned area in accordance with University Policy. Reviews Building Service Workers performance evaluations with Building Service Forepersons.
  • Initiates disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Supervises and oversees hiring of Building Service Workers and Building Service Forepersons.
  • Fosters a respectful, collaborative, and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork and professional conduct.
  • Identifies developmental needs of others by coaching, mentoring, or otherwise assisting others to improve their knowledge, skills, or abilities.

Operations and Service Oversight
  • Conducts regular inspections of assigned area to evaluate cleaning standards, identify operational issues, and ensure compliance with departmental expectations.
  • Assists in the development of standards for determining cleaning procedures and frequency of cleaning, reviews, and revises assignments when necessary.
  • Meets with colleagues of various departments and assigned Forepersons to coordinate operations and review service needs.
  • Evaluates customer service outcomes and implements improvements as needed.
  • Prepares and develops reports, training materials, memoranda, and office communications.

Resource and Equipment Management
  • Conducts periodic inventories of supplies and assists Building Service Forepersons with estimating future operational needs.
  • Tests and evaluates new products and machines.

Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands andWorking Conditions
Mostwork is performed in an office or indoor building environment navigatingassigned facilities to conduct inspections, monitor operations, and supervisestaff. Position may involve occasional bending, reaching, climbing stairs, andlifting or moving items weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.
Occasional exposure to varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold,humidity, dust, cleaning chemicals, noise, and outdoor weather conditions, mayoccur while conducting facility inspections or responding to operational needs.
Work Schedule, Travel, orOther Job Expectations
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:30AM -4:00PM.
This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.
Coverage of the after-hours emergency phone line is expected, in two-calendarweek increments, on a rotational basis with other Building Service management.Overtime may be needed to assist with after-hours emergencies Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years (36 months) of experience in building service operations or related work.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) in building custodial supervisory capacity.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of accepted cleaning methods and techniques used in providing institutional building services to universities.
  • Understanding of the principles and processes for providing exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple responsibilities, and effectively allocate staff resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respond appropriately to others' needs or concerns.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer software, hardware and operating systems.
  • Ability to evaluate cleaning equipment, products, and procedures and make recommendations for operational improvements.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3445 - Building Service Supervisor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search.
The wage for this position is $69,250.90. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.
