How much do building science jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Building Science position, and why are they important?
To succeed in Building Science, a strong background in architecture, engineering, or environmental science, along with knowledge of building systems and energy modeling, is essential. Familiarity with tools like EnergyPlus, PHPP, and building information modeling (BIM) software, as well as relevant certifications such as LEED or Building Performance Institute credentials, are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication skills help professionals excel in multidisciplinary teams and client-facing projects. Mastery of these abilities is crucial for optimizing building performance, sustainability, and meeting regulatory standards.
What does a building scientist do?
What are the most common challenges faced by professionals in Building Science roles?
Building Science professionals often encounter challenges such as balancing energy efficiency goals with budget constraints, staying current with evolving building codes, and effectively integrating new technologies into existing structures. Collaboration with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients is also essential to ensure that recommendations align with project objectives and stakeholder expectations. Managing detailed simulations and thorough performance assessments can be demanding but are critical for successful project outcomes. These challenges provide opportunities to innovate and deliver high-impact, sustainable solutions in the built environment.
What is a Building Science job?
A Building Science job involves applying principles of physics, engineering, and environmental science to design, construct, and maintain energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. Professionals in this field analyze building performance, focusing on factors like energy efficiency, moisture control, indoor air quality, and material durability. They often work with architects, engineers, and construction teams to optimize building systems and ensure compliance with industry codes and standards. These roles can be found in consulting firms, government agencies, research institutions, and construction companies.

Job description
Our client is seeking a driven, detail-oriented Building Science Technologist to join their growing team in Calgary. In this role, you will bridge the gap between architectural design and real-world performance, ensuring our building enclosure systems stand up to Calgary’s unique and demanding climate.
You will spend your time both in the office—utilizing your deep knowledge of architectural drawing standards—and on-site, conducting field reviews and interacting directly with clients. If you have a passion for building performance, hands-on construction problem-solving, and delivering exceptional client and contractor relations skills, we want to hear from you.
Advantages
Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Paid professional development and support for professional designations (e.g., CET, RRO).
A dynamic, collaborative work environment with strong mentorship opportunities.
Flexible work-life balance with a mix of office and field work
15 days of paid vacation
Long term growth opportunities
Opportunity to work on high profile projects
Responsibilities
Technical & Drafting
Enclosure Design & Detailing: Develop, review, and refine detailing for building enclosure systems (air/vapor barriers, thermal insulation, roofing, and waterproofing) to ensure high-performance continuity.
Drafting Excellence: Prepare accurate construction documents, details, and sections using AutoCAD and/or Bluebeam strictly adhering to Architectural drawing standards.
Specifications: Utilize MasterFormat to assist in preparing, reviewing, and organizing project specifications and technical data sheets.
Site & Field Work
Field Reviews: Conduct on-site inspections and testing (e.g., infrared thermography, electrical impedance scanning, smoke testing, wind testing to FM 1-52) to verify construction complies with design documents and building codes.
Site Reports: Document site conditions, progress, and deficiencies through clear, concise field review reports and photo logs.
Client & Project Management
Client Relations: Act as a primary, face-to-face point of contact for clients, contractors, and project stakeholders on-site and in meetings, translating complex technical issues into actionable solutions.
Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and architects to resolve complex building envelope challenges efficiently.
Qualifications
Education: Diploma in Architectural Technologies, Building Science, Civil Engineering Technology, Civil or Structural Engineering.
Experience: 3 to 5 years of dedicated experience in building science consulting, architectural technology, or building envelope quality assurance.
Standards & Codes: Strong familiarity with Alberta Building Code (ABC), National Building Code (NBC), and MasterFormat structures.
Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD; working knowledge of Bluebeam and THERM is considered a strong asset.
Field Ready: Proven site experience with a solid understanding of construction safety protocols, sequencing, and typical building envelope assemblies.
Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven on site contractor experience and the ability to maintain strong client relationships under pressure.
Travel: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle for site visits around Calgary and Southern Alberta.
