About the role

We're looking for a Senior Structural or Building Forensic Engineer to join our growing team in the Edmonton!


Our team performs forensic engineering duties for Intact across Canada, with representatives in Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, Alberta and British-Columbia. This role will mainly consist of travel within the Edmonton Area.


Through a process of investigation and research, the successful candidate will need to understand and identify the causal factors of damage while eliminating other possible causes for residential, commercial and light industrial claims.


You will recreate the sequence of events that led to the loss, reverse engineer the scene and determine the most probable cause, confidently justifying your decision. By validating the hypotheses and testing the scenarios under study, you will apply the scientific method to the identification of the causes of losses and provide this information to our claims team. In addition, you will produce short and detailed reports in the case of major damages, and you will also be called to testify in court to present your expert opinion.


What you'll do here:

  • Assist the claims team to quickly and efficiently guide the resolution of building and structural claims through a portfolio of residential and commercial buildings as well as various other structures.
  • Complete mandates for our internal and external experts and work in collaboration with our building evaluators and other key stakeholders.
  • Travel and meet with insured and fully understand the circumstances with objectivity surrounding their claim.
  • Document the scene and state your opinion as to the probable cause of the damage.
  • Record your opinion in writing and intervene to contribute to conflict resolution in the course of a claim by providing your technical insight.
  • The types of claims can vary, including building collapses, roof and cladding detachments, cracks in a building foundation, in-ground pool damage, collapses or retrofits, water ingress, etc. In short, any problem that may affect a building or structure.
  • Assist in the record keeping and the follow-up of information to maintain the certificate of authorization.

What you bring to the table:

  • University degree in Civil, Structural and/or Building Engineering or combination of Education and relevant experience
  • Member in good standing with APEGA Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta
  • A minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Have a valid driver's licence and a good driving record.
  • Advanced knowledge of buildings, construction methods.
  • Advanced knowledge of part 9 of the Canadian building code and part 3 and 4 is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the insurance field and as an expert before the courts is considered an important asset.
  • Strong professional presentation and communication skills, both oral and written.
