Job description

Purpose Under the direction of the Chief Building Official, performs a variety of advanced administrative/support functions for the Building Department as well receives and logs residential and commercial building plans submitted for review. Essential Functions Receive and review building applications from citizens and contractors; Assess scope of project and relevant permit requirements; Educate citizens and contractors regarding necessary permits and general code compliance of proposed projects; Assist and advise the general public regarding building codes, permit requirements, compliance procedures, and safety regulations to ensure adherence to local and state standards; Assist in completingpermitapplicationsby explaining buildingpermitrequirements; Record inspections and assign them to the appropriate inspector based on the specified criteria; Maintain records and reports for departmental statistics; Performs all administrative/support work for staff including taking calls, drafting letter, and assisting victors; Organizes/maintains files and records and provides follow-up on issues/concerns; Prepares routine department correspondence; Helps develop the Department Budget and monitors budget status; Performs research of specific department information or general information; Performs additional duties as assigned; Qualifications Knowledge of operations,services,and activities ofabuilding department; Basicknowledgeof related buildingcodes; Knowledge of general bookkeeping practices and procedures; City governmentorganization, functions, policies, rules,andregulations; Skill in maintaining confidential information and in the application of judgement in release of information to authorized persons; Office procedures,methods,andequipment includingcomputers andapplicablesoftware applications suchasmicro-softword,excelspreadsheets,anddatabases; Skill in maintaining filing and record systems; Abilityto understandtheorganizationand operation oftheCityandofoutside agenciesasnecessaryto assumetheassignedresponsibilities; Skill in following oral and written instructions, policies and procedures; Skill in use of MS Office applications; Readand identifygeographicalspecifications; Communicateclearlyandconcisely,bothorallyandinwriting; Establishand maintain effective working relationships with thosecontactedinthecourseof work.

Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent with two years of clerical experience in the building/construction industry. Possess or ability to obtain certification as Permit Tech issued by the International Code Council within 12 months of employment. Current TN/VA Driver's License.
