ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Black & McDonald's Alberta team is growing! If you are a committed and collaborative professional looking to contribute to a hard-working, innovative team, this opportunity is for you.

As a Building Operator, you will have overall responsibility for maintaining client facilities located in Edmonton and the greater Edmonton area. Working closely with the Facilities Management and Operations (FMO) Project Manager and the broader team, you will plan and execute responsive and planned maintenance in alignment with contract requirements. This includes maintaining safe conditions inside and outside the facilities, performing minor plumbing and electrical repairs, overseeing subcontractor safety, and conducting mechanical inspections and equipment maintenance using FMO strategies to ensure continued operation.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs basic tours and log readings.
  • Performs duties related to cleaning, painting, garbage removal, snow removal, HVAC, plumbing, and other mechanical duties.
  • Establishes methods to meet work schedules and coordinates work activities with other subcontractors; supervises sub-contractors and assists them as required; verifies that required work is completed and reports any deficiencies with proposed remedial actions.
  • Responds to tenant requests propmptly and safely.
  • Complies with the Company's code of conduct, health and safety policies, and work practices at all times; prioritizes safety in all tasks .
  • Regularly communicates health, safety and environmental issues or concerns with other staff, sub-contractors and clients.
  • Builds and maintains client and supplier/vendor relationships to enhance competitiveness in the industry.
  • Assists in developing and implementing quality control programs.
  • Prepares progress reports and issues progress schedules to clients.
  • Requests/purchase of materials and supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Class 5 or 4 Power Engineering Certification.
  • Trade apprenticeship/training in plumbing, HVAC or electrical would be an asset.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5 plus years' experience as Building Operator in a commercial facility, preferred.
  • Candidates with less experience but have related work experience in other trades, combined with Power Engineering certification, will be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience in building automation systems, fire and life safety systems.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical building systems and equipment.
  • Ability to use computers, tablets, smartphones and related technology efficiently; adept in handling work orders through mobile applications including MS Office 365.
  • Maintains a professional demeanour with clients, fellow employees.
  • Clean Class 5 AB Driver's License. Practices responsible driving, and performs basic upkeep of the assigned vehicle. Available to travel to various assigned client facilities.
  • Available for after hours on-call and Emergency call outs on a rotational basis.
  • Physical demands of the job include walking and standing for extended periods, lifting and carrying objects as needed, bending, crouching, and working in confined spaces, safely use ladders and other equipment, tools.
