THE ROLE
The Building Mechanic is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, plumbing, and building systems that support daily operations at Huntington Place. Reporting to the Manager of Engineering Services, this position ensures building equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably while supporting conventions, exhibitions, and special events.
This role performs preventive maintenance, responds to service requests, assists with event support, and helps maintain a safe, comfortable environment for guests, clients, exhibitors, and employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Building Systems Operations
  • Operate and maintain mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems throughout the facility.

  • Operate and maintain large compression refrigeration installations.

  • Start and stop chilled water and condenser water pumps and control steam systems.

  • Operate and monitor the building automation/control system (BAS) as required.

  • Operate and maintain heating and ventilation equipment.

Maintenance & Repairs
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and perform minor and emergency repairs to pumps, steam lines, valves, drainage systems, HVAC equipment, lighting, motors, electrical systems, and related building infrastructure.

  • Perform general building maintenance including replacing filters, lighting, hardware, plumbing fixtures, door components, broken glass, and other facility repairs.

  • Paint machinery, piping, tubing, refrigeration equipment, and related mechanical systems as needed.

  • Conduct operational inspections to verify equipment performance and reliability.

Event & Facility Support
  • Support installation and setup of event equipment including sound systems, podiums, stage skirting, pipe and drape, chair risers, and bleachers.

  • Respond promptly to service requests and operational issues throughout the facility.

  • Operate forklifts, electric carts, and other facility equipment as needed.

  • Record equipment readings and maintenance activities in operational logs.

Preventive Maintenance & Safety
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on facility equipment and systems.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, facility policies, and engineering best practices.

  • Assist with maintaining a safe and efficient operating environment throughout Huntington Place.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.
KEY DELIVERABLES
Safe and reliable operation of building mechanical and electrical systems.
Timely completion of preventive maintenance and repair work.
Prompt response to facility service requests.
Proper documentation of maintenance activities and equipment performance.
Well-maintained building systems supporting successful events.
Compliance with safety standards and operational procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical education, trade school, or equivalent building maintenance training preferred.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in building operations, maintenance, and repair of commercial mechanical and electrical systems.

  • Experience operating large central refrigeration systems preferred.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience maintaining building, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and electrical systems.

  • Knowledge of building automation systems, maintenance equipment, tools, and applicable safety regulations.

  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Special Requirements, Licenses & Certifications
  • Third Class Refrigeration Equipment Operator License preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.

  • Valid driver's license preferred.

  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates throughout a large convention center and requires work in mechanical rooms, event spaces, rooftops, and public areas.
Physical requirements may include:
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, and lifting.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

  • Operating forklifts, electric carts, and maintenance equipment.

  • Exposure to mechanical equipment, varying temperatures, noise, and outdoor weather conditions.

  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as operational needs require.
