DESCRIPTION

The Building Maintenance Technician assists in the general maintenance and repair of city-owned buildings and facilities. This position performs routine tasks to support the safety, functionality, and upkeep of municipal buildings. Work includes basic repair, inspection, and maintenance duties under the direction of supervisory staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 1 year experience in building, facility, or mechanical maintenance preferred.
  • A Valid Driver's License Class C is required at the time of placement and a clean driving record.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural components.
  • Ability to use common hand tools, power tools, ladders and maintenance equipment safely.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assigned tasks with accuracy.
  • Skills in computers at a basic level for completing work orders and documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to perform physical labor in various weather conditions and environments.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on city buildings and facilities including basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and general upkeep.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify maintenance needs or safety concerns and report findings to supervisory staff.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance tasks such as filter changes, lubrication, cleaning, and simple equipment servicing.
  • Complete assigned work orders, document activities, and maintain accurate records of maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with setting up and preparing facilities for city functions, meetings, or special events.
  • Respond to maintenance requests, minor issues, and service calls to restore normal operation of building systems.
  • Support senior staff or contractors during major repairs, renovations, or projects.
  • Follow safety procedures, comply with regulations, and maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Employees are required to supply their own hand tools; a detailed list will be provided after employment begins.
  • Schedule maintenance, repair, and renovation projects for city buildings, as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor, including HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and other structural components, in collaboration with departmental staff and external contractors.
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and reporting related to building maintenance activities, including work orders, inspection reports, maintenance logs, and inventory records.
  • Respond to emergency situations, such as power outages, plumbing leaks, and structural damage, to mitigate risks and restore functionality to city buildings as quickly as possible.
  • Collaborate with other city departments, external agencies, contractors, and vendors to coordinate building maintenance activities, share resources, and address service disruptions or emergencies.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, codes, and standards governing building maintenance, safety, and accessibility, and recommend updates or improvements as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
