What Is a Building Inspector?
A building inspector’s primary job responsibilities are to look at public buildings and ensure they are up to federal, state, and local codes. In this job, your duties are to look at the structural integrity, electrical wiring, water connections, and other aspects of the construction and make sure that everything works as it should and complies with all safety regulations. Inspectors have to know a variety of building disciplines and trades, or at least the laws related to them. Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Director Utilities Services & Chief Operating Engineer, the Building Information and Controls Specialist serves as an integral member within the Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) team at our Mississauga Campus. The incumbent will work closely with FMP Utilities staff to support the operation and upkeep of Building Automation System (BAS) hardware and user graphic interfaces. The Specialist is responsible for the daily inspection, maintenance and optimization of the BAS systems. He/She would also be required to configure and optimize BAS operating schedules, alarm strategies and trend logs. This position would also analyze BAS performance data and implement advanced control sequence improvements to enhance system reliability. The Building Information and Controls Specialist will ensure operational efficiency of BAS, while actively supporting UTM Climate Positive Plan and campus decarbonization objectives.
The role would be required to work closely with FMP projects team to ensure compliance with UofT's BAS design standards in renovation & new construction projects. In collaboration with the Information & Instructional Technology Services (I&ITS) department, the Building Information and Controls Specialist will assist in ensuring effective coordination with Network Engineering and the BAS vendors. The Specialist will conduct fieldwork and troubleshoot issues with building automation hardware, control wiring networks, and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

Your responsibilities will include:
- Ability to identify, report facility repair and/or maintenance needs in a large, complex institution
- Liaising with clients to resolve minor complaints and address issues
- Liaising with Capital Projects staff on network requirements
- Experience overseeing the implementation of renovations
- Keeping well-informed on current technologies, best practices, industry standards and health and safety legislation/practices
- Conducting routine building inspections
- Analyzing and preparing modifications to components of network infrastructure
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum five (5) years of recent, proven work experience with Building Automation System (BAS), including experience with BACnet (Building Automation and Control Networks) and Modbus protocol integration, preferably in a University or College environment.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Effective organizational, planning and time management skills, superior problem-solving, strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must be able to travel between buildings, climb ladders and able to work in restricted spaces on roof tops, in ceilings, laboratories and at construction sites
- Troubleshooting skills on Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems and Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment in complex building systems, housing research laboratories and animal care facilities
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to work closely with various internal and external stakeholders to support the installation, operation & upkeep of HVAC automation hardware, BAS network end devices
- Capable to interpret and understand mechanical, electrical and BAS controls drawings
Assets (Nonessential):
- Relevant electrical trade certification or equivalent experience is considered an asset
- Recent work experience in Building Automations Systems i.e. Siemens Apogee, Insight and Desigo CC or equivalent platforms is desirable.
- Experience in commissioning of Air Handling Units (AHUs)
- Familiarity with networks- VLANs, DHCP, IPv4 and TCP protocols with familiarity of structured cabling would be an asset
- Capable of explaining technical concepts to individuals unfamiliar with BAS
- Knowledge of policies, practices and procedures governing renovations and maintenance of facilities at University of Toronto
