Building Inspectors primarily review completed structures for code compliance, while Construction Inspectors oversee ongoing construction projects to ensure standards are met during building. Both roles require similar credentials and often work in overlapping environments, but their focus differs in timing and scope.
A building inspector’s primary job responsibilities are to look at public buildings and ensure they are up to federal, state, and local codes. In this job, your duties are to look at the structural integrity, electrical wiring, water connections, and other aspects of the construction and make sure that everything works as it should and complies with all safety regulations. Inspectors have to know a variety of building disciplines and trades, or at least the laws related to them. For example, you have to know basic wiring codes and how to recognize a dangerous situation, such as broken or loose wiring, as well as general building hazards.

The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City's step placement policy.
ELIGIBILITY LIST PREFERENCE ORDER
Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered (when the vacancy is open to external applicants).

POSITION DESIGNATION
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
JOB SUMMARY
This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Development Center Division of the Development Services Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of the Chief Plumbing Inspector. Journeyman level skill and knowledge relevant to the plumbing field must be acquired prior to assuming the duties of this position. Essential job functions include: traveling to various construction sites to conduct ground, rough, and final plumbing inspections related to plumbing construction, installation, repair, alteration, and maintenance of plumbing apparatus and fixtures on all structures to ensure compliance with safety and quality regulations as are specified and required by the Oklahoma City Plumbing Codes. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that plumbing systems are properly installed in order to provide for the safety, health, and welfare of the general public. All plumbing inspections are performed independently with unusual problems or situations referred to the Plumbing Inspector II and/or the Chief Plumbing Inspector. The employee must exhibit tact and diplomacy in communicating with citizens, contractors, building owners or managers, and departmental personnel concerning relevant aspects of work performed. Work products are periodically reviewed at the discretion of the Plumbing Inspector II and/or Chief Plumbing Inspector.
VETERANS PREFERENCE
Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
*Note: Licenses must be issued by the State of Oklahoma or a state having reciprocity with the State of Oklahoma.
**Note: City Ordinance (Chapter 42 Plumbing Code, Section 42-22) requires that the employee shall have at least five years' experience as a licensed journeyman plumber, a licensed plumbing contractor, or have at least five years' experience as a plumbing inspector in a municipality of 20,000 or larger population.
The Plumbing Inspector I shall not be interested directly or indirectly in any plumbing business within the City. The Plumbing Inspector I shall not perform any plumbing work within the City.
State Law and/or City Ordinance require that the employee possess or obtain a permanent State Plumbing Inspector License within one (1) year of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion. If an individual is selected who does not possess a permanent State Plumbing Inspector License, that individual will be classified as a Provisional Trades Inspector and be compensated at the Provisional Trades Inspector salary range until such time as the license is obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a State Plumbing Inspector License within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.
