The Factory Maintenance Apprentice / Assistant Mechanic supports the maintenance department by assisting with the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of manufacturing equipment and facility systems. This role is designed for an individual who is mechanically inclined and eager to develop the skills necessary to become a skilled industrial maintenance mechanic.
Working alongside experienced technicians, the apprentice will receive hands-on training in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and facility maintenance while helping ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with preventive maintenance on manufacturing equipment and machinery.
- Support troubleshooting and repairs of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
- Help install, assemble, and relocate production equipment.
- Perform routine inspections to identify potential maintenance issues.
- Lubricate machinery and replace belts, bearings, motors, chains, rollers, and other wear components.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and maintenance work areas in a clean and organized condition.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and assist in minimizing production downtime.
- Assist with facility maintenance, including lighting, plumbing, HVAC, compressed air systems, and building repairs.
- Learn to read equipment manuals, blueprints, and maintenance documentation.
- Record maintenance activities using maintenance logs or software.
- Follow all OSHA safety regulations and company safety policies.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve equipment reliability and efficiency.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school, vocational training, or coursework in industrial maintenance, mechanical technology, electrical technology, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous mechanical experience (automotive, construction, military, farm equipment, machine shop, or manufacturing) is a plus.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
- Basic understanding of hand and power tools.
- Ability to read measuring devices and perform basic math.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable attendance and positive work ethic.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Comfortable working around manufacturing equipment and machinery.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required.
