Job description

Mendocino Railway is the owner/operator of freight and passenger railroads including the California Western Railroad / Skunk Train and the River Fox Train. The world-famous Skunk Train is a standard gage passenger railroad that was founded in 1885, and operates 40 miles between Fort Bragg and Willits, in Mendocino County, California. 


We are hiring Building & Grounds Maintenance and Janitorial team members to maintain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming facilities across our railroad operations. This hands-on position performs routine janitorial duties, groundskeeping, and basic building maintenance and repairs at stations, offices, shops, and other company properties. This is a part-time position with the flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

  • General janitorial duties at the depot, depot grounds, and on board the trains including cleaning and sanitizing facilities and equipment, trash removal, and washing of railcars and locomotives.
  • Perform landscaping and outdoor upkeep around all properties and guest areas to ensure safe and clear walking spaces. 
  • Conduct minor maintenance and repairs at the depot, on depot grounds and on board the trains including painting, replacing fixtures, and assisting with general maintenance projects. 
  • Safely use and apply janitorial and other related cleaning supplies.
  • Safely use small hand tools and powered equipment. 
  • Ensure proper application and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Responsible for fueling and cleaning railroad vehicles prior to events.
  • Assist with set-up and take-down of equipment and supplies needed for special events as well as holiday themed decorations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace and assist with assigned side work.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Pre-employment drug screen (including medical marijuana) and criminal background check required prior to hiring.
  • Valid and current driver’s license.
  • 1+ years of related experience.
  • Skilled at use of basic hand and power tools.
  • Skilled at building and assembling materials.
  • Painting and woodworking skills preferred.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance and demeanor.
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Willingness to work both onboard a moving train and at a station or event locations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. safely.
  • Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments and around moving rail equipment (with provided safety training).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and walk on uneven surfaces (train platforms, gravel, etc.).
