Position Overview

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the design, coordination, and construction administration of electrical systems for commercial building projects. This role will develop electrical designs from initial concept through construction documents while coordinating closely with architects, owners, mechanical engineers, plumbing engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.

Projects may include commercial offices, corporate headquarters, tenant improvements, high-rise buildings, base-building renovations, and building system upgrades. The ideal candidate has experience designing electrical systems for commercial buildings and understands the coordination required within multidisciplinary MEP projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design electrical systems for commercial buildings, tenant improvements, renovations, and base-building upgrades.
  • Develop electrical power distribution, lighting, lighting controls, emergency power, and related building systems.
  • Perform electrical load calculations, voltage drop calculations, panel schedules, and equipment sizing.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, electrical plans, details, schedules, and specifications.
  • Design branch circuitry and power distribution systems for lighting, receptacles, mechanical equipment, and specialty equipment.
  • Coordinate electrical designs with architectural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, and other building systems.
  • Review existing building electrical infrastructure and determine available capacity for new tenant or building loads.
  • Perform site surveys and field verification of existing electrical conditions.
  • Prepare construction documents from schematic design through final permit and construction drawings.
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings to identify coordination issues and potential design conflicts.
  • Support lighting layouts, lighting controls, and energy-code compliance.
  • Coordinate electrical requirements for HVAC equipment, pumps, controls, and other mechanical systems.
  • Prepare and respond to RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and contractor questions during construction.
  • Participate in project meetings with architects, owners, contractors, and consultants.
  • Perform construction site observations and assist with punch lists and project closeout.
  • Support quality-control reviews to ensure designs and calculations meet project requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining established schedules and deadlines.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • 3+ years of electrical engineering or electrical design experience preferred.
  • Experience designing electrical systems for commercial buildings.
  • Experience with tenant improvement and/or base-building projects highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of power distribution, lighting, circuitry, and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to perform electrical load calculations and equipment sizing.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical construction documents.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical and building codes, including NEC and California energy requirements where applicable.
  • Strong understanding of multidisciplinary MEP coordination.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus for more experienced candidates.
  • Experience with commercial office, corporate headquarters, high-rise, or large tenant improvement projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with electrical design and calculation software.
  • Familiarity with Title 24 and energy-efficient lighting requirements.
  • Experience with emergency and standby power systems.
  • Familiarity with fire alarm, low-voltage, telecommunications, or security system coordination.
  • Experience providing construction administration and field support.
  • Experience working within an MEP consulting engineering environment.
