What Does a Building Code Inspector Do?
A building code inspector assesses structures to ensure that they meet all local and state requirements. In this role, you travel to different buildings and inspect them for structural integrity and safety. In addition to the overall construction, you examine components of the building, such as exits, plumbing, heating, electrical, and fire safety systems. Job description
POSITION SUMMARY Enforces environmental violations such as litter, illegal dumping, improper refuse and recycling set out, etc. for quality of life improvements and resident health. Communicates with residents and/or property owners to clarify and resolve violations.
Department: Public Works Salary: $59,657 per year. Union: This position is included in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 2719 bargaining unit and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Posting Type: City First Announcement/Bid: Current AFSCME 2719 City employees must submit applications by May 27, 2026, for City First consideration.
Union Bid Form: None required. Your application for this position will serve as your union Bid Form. Civil Service Classification: Non-Competitive REQUIREMENTS General Requirements: You must submit or show proof of all the following at the time of application (unless otherwise indicated below) or your application will be disqualified.

A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License (or out of state equivalent) is required at the time of submitting the application and will be verified prior to appointment to the position and must be maintained throughout employment. Daily use of a personal vehicle is required to perform multiple site inspections across the City of Pittsburgh.
The frequency of site visits varies each day. Mileage reimbursement will be provided in accordance with the City of Pittsburgh Employee Travel Policy. Vehicle must comply with the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, including but not limited to registration, insurance, and operating condition, as a continuing condition of employment.
NOTE: The City of Pittsburgh, as a matter of policy, conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. The background investigation includes, but is not limited to, criminal background, driver's license, and City of Pittsburgh real estate tax payments. Candidates may be disqualified from consideration based on the results of their background investigation, as it relates to the job for which the applicant is being considered.
NOTE: Candidates being considered for employment must submit official transcripts verifying post-secondary education (college/university, trade school, etc.) prior to hire. WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show one (1) year of full-time experience in field inspections, quality assurances, clerical work, or a related field. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis). EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show an Associate's Degree or two (2) years of completed post-secondary education in any field.

EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position, based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above. The Total Qualifying Requirement is three (3) years.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position.

Medical: Required. POSITION DUTIES Inspects and follows up on 311 requests. Investigates illegal dumping hot spots on public property and on other city roadways, right of ways, and alleys prone to illegal dumping.
Represents the City in local court. Conducts outreach via resident communication and improves public perception of City's litter response. Works cooperatively with Department of Public Works colleagues and partner agencies on timely responses to requests and proactive resolutions.
Stays informed of codes and ordinances affecting litter abatement. Communicates with parcel owners via email and phone as it pertains to violations. Performs other related tasks, duties, activities, and functions of related personnel as assigned or required.
