Job description

Local Building Inspector
Building Department
Salary: $43.96 hourly/37.5 hours weekly

The Town of Brookline is seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable Local Building Inspector to join its Inspectional Services team. Under the general direction of the Building Commissioner, the Local Building Inspector performs technical inspection and enforcement work to ensure compliance with the Massachusetts State Building Code, Architectural Access Codes, and Town of Brookline Zoning Bylaw, as well as other applicable laws and regulations related to building construction and design.

This position is responsible for reviewing plans, conducting field inspections, responding to inquiries from the public and building professionals, and identifying and addressing code and bylaw violations. Work involves both office-based administrative tasks and fieldwork at active construction sites.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Enforcing the State Building Code, Architectural Access Codes, and local zoning bylaws.
  • Inspecting new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with building, safety, and zoning requirements.
  • Reviewing and approving permit applications, building plans, and blueprints; verifying that approved materials, products, and construction techniques are used.
  • Establishing and maintaining inspection schedules and priorities.
  • Responding to inquiries and complaints from property owners, tenants, contractors, architects, and others regarding code interpretation, department policies, violations, and general information.
  • Identifying violations such as illegal construction, permit issues, and sign violations; issuing notices of violation and appearing in court when required.
  • Overseeing the issuance of certificates of occupancy, contractor licenses, and registrations; maintaining accurate records and entering data into departmental systems.
  • Performing related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma; additional technical training preferred; and at least five years of experience in the supervision of building construction and zoning enforcement, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts Building Code and related statutes as well as a solid understanding of construction methods, inspection practices, fire prevention, light, ventilation, and safe egress requirements, and excellent communication skills

Special Requirements:

MA Certification as a Local Building Inspector
Valid MA Class D Drivers License
