Job description

The Opportunity

WHM Structural Engineers is seeking an Intermediate Structural Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of structural building projects. Working under the direction of a Project Engineer, the Intermediate Structural Engineer completes substantial design scopes, coordinates assigned portions of projects, works closely with engineering and drafting team members, and provides technical guidance to Junior Structural Engineers.

This role is suited to a developing structural engineer who is ready to take greater ownership of their design work, strengthen their technical judgment, and contribute more actively to project coordination and team development. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a range of structural materials and building types while learning directly from experienced Project Engineers, Associates, and Principals.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate is a practical and thoughtful structural engineer with strong foundational design skills and reliable judgment within familiar structural systems and project conditions. They are comfortable completing substantial portions of structural design with moderate independence while recognizing when technical review or additional direction is required.

They are organized, detail-oriented, and proactive in communicating progress, coordination issues, and upcoming deadlines. They work collaboratively with engineers, drafters, consultants, and contractors and are interested in supporting the development of junior team members while continuing to build their own technical capability and professional judgment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete structural analysis and design for assigned portions of building projects with moderate independence under the direction of a Project Engineer.
  • Perform gravity and lateral design calculations and develop practical, efficient, and buildable structural solutions.
  • Prepare calculations, models, sketches, markups, specifications, reports, and other technical information for review.
  • Coordinate assigned engineering requirements with Project Drafters and Structural Drafters and lead coordination for defined portions of a project when assigned.
  • Review drawings, models, shop drawings, specifications, calculations, and other project information within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor personal workload, budgeted hours, and deadlines, and proactively communicate project status, technical concerns, and anticipated challenges.
  • Participate in coordination with clients, architects, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and internal project teams on assigned matters.
  • Provide technical guidance and informal mentoring to Junior Structural Engineers.
  • Support design-related technical questions during construction in coordination with the Project Engineer and Field Services team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
  • Typically, 3-7 years of relevant structural building-design experience; level and compensation will be assessed based on demonstrated capability, judgment, and independence.
  • Experience designing buildings using concrete, wood, steel, or a combination of structural materials.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian building codes and applicable material standards.
  • Experience completing gravity and lateral structural analysis and design.
  • Ability to prepare clear calculations, technical sketches, markups, and design documentation.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience with structural analysis software and Bluebeam.

Compensation and Benefits

$82,000 - $103,000 per year

Final compensation will reflect the successful candidate's relevant experience, technical capabilities, project coordination experience, demonstrated level of independence and alignment with the role's requirements.

  • Extended health and dental benefits.
  • Paid professional dues.
  • Annual health spending account.
  • Professional development support.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Free on-site parking.
  • Direct access to senior leaders and room to grow into broader technical and leadership responsibilities.
