What is a building automation design engineer?

Building Automation Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems that control various functions within buildings, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and security. Their work ensures buildings operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably while optimizing energy usage. They collaborate with architects, contractors, and facility managers to integrate automation systems into new or existing structures. These engineers must have a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, as well as proficiency in specialized software used for system design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building automation design engineer?

To thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, HVAC systems, and building automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in system design. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), AutoCAD, PLC programming, and certifications like LEED or Tridium Niagara are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, and effective communication with clients and contractors set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable building operations that meet client and regulatory expectations.

What are some typical challenges building automation design engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing building systems?

Building Automation Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing cybersecurity risks, and minimizing disruption to building operations. They must carefully assess existing infrastructure, coordinate with facility managers, and develop phased implementation plans to ensure smooth transitions. Staying updated with evolving industry standards and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams are essential to overcoming these obstacles and delivering effective automation solutions.

What is the difference between Building Automation Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

The Solution Engineer serves as a technical leader during pre ‑ construction and early project phases, translating owner and project requirements into coordinated, constructible BAS design ‑ assist solutions. This role partners closely with Engineers of Record, contractors, and internal delivery teams to identify risks early, resolve integration and constructability challenges, and deliver complete, compliant, and commissioning ‑ ready engineering packages. The Solution Engineer ensures alignment between contract scope, design intent, and execution strategy while supporting complex projects across a wide range of vertical markets.

This position is offered as a hybrid role , combining the flexibility of remote work with the benefits of in-person collaboration. Team members may be required from time to time to visit the Siemens local office and/or worksite based on project expectations, with the remaining time remote. Specific scheduling may vary based on team needs, project timelines, and individual performance.

As a Solution Engineer, you will:

  • Translate project goals into complete BAS design-assist deliverables for a wide range of facilities, including higher education and K–12, data centers, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, high-rise buildings, and laboratories.
  • Lead constructability and integration readiness reviews to surface scope gaps, design conflicts, and interoperability risks early, and drive resolution with the EOR/GC/MEP teams.
  • Coordinate and drive development of design deliverables with area offices and stakeholders, ensuring documentation meets contract requirements, customer expectations, and Siemens standards, including:
  • Third-party system integration requirements
  • Mechanical/electrical layouts
  • Network diagrams and architecture
  • Bills of materials
  • Sequences of operations
  • Valve and damper schedules
  • DDC panel configuration and point mapping
  • Participate in internal and external meetings to support opportunities, provide technical direction, and contribute to pre-construction, project planning activities and engineering bid deliverables.
  • Lead design-assist execution through release, ensuring engineering packages are complete, compliant, and commissioning-ready; deliver a documented handoff to delivery teams, including scope assumptions, risk items, alternates, and commissioning readiness guidance.
  • Collaborate directly with contractors and the EOR to protect design intent and drive cost-effective technical decisions, including site visits and in-person working sessions as needed.
  • Analyze construction plans, contract specs, and applicable codes to identify requirements, conflicts, and potential risks early—before they become field issues.
  • Create engineering re-estimates and partner with sales and operations leadership to align scope, assumptions, and execution strategy
  • Perform peer reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency across engineering outputs.
  • Support large, complex, and innovative projects—leveraging internal and external resources to deliver results on time and with high customer satisfaction.

You will make an impact with these qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in engineering, electronics, computer science or related field; bachelor’s degree preferred. Will consider equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 5+ years of building automation (HVAC controls) design experience
  • Ability to travel up to 25%, Occasional travel will be required for important team gatherings, project kick-offs, strategic discussions, or training
  • Apply strong knowledge of engineering and contracting processes including submittal packages, documentation expectations, and requirements tied to successful project execution
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and business operations within construction/contracting environments
  • Confident communicator able to present technical concepts clearly to groups; C-level customer experience preferred
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without company sponsorship
