What is a building automation control engineer?

Building Automation Control Engineers are professionals who design, install, program, and maintain the systems that control a building's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) operations—such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and security. Their work ensures buildings operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably by integrating various systems under centralized, automated control. These engineers often work with sophisticated software and hardware to optimize energy usage and maintain environmental standards. They may also troubleshoot issues, upgrade systems, and ensure compliance with relevant codes and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building automation control engineer?

To thrive as a Building Automation Control Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, control systems, and HVAC principles, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with BAS/BMS platforms (such as Siemens, Honeywell, or Johnson Controls), programming languages, and industry certifications like LEED or Niagara are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help engineers effectively coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary teams. Mastery of these skills ensures efficient system design, integration, and maintenance, which are critical for occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and building sustainability.

What are some common challenges faced by building automation control engineers during project implementation?

Building Automation Control Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation systems with legacy equipment, coordinating with multiple stakeholders (like HVAC technicians, electricians, and IT professionals), and ensuring that installations meet both client requirements and regulatory standards. Troubleshooting connectivity issues and optimizing system performance while minimizing downtime are also frequent concerns. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these obstacles and delivering successful projects.

  • Develop operational workflows that combine automation, orchestration, AI, and Human-in-the-Loop decisioning.
  • Create digital workers capable of interacting across web applications, desktop applications, APIs, documents, and enterprise systems.
  • Collaborate with customer stakeholders to understand operational challenges and work optimization opportunities.
  • Participate in workflow discovery, solution design, implementation, testing, and production rollout activities.
  • Utilize AI-assisted development tools including GitHub Copilot, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, and other modern Generative AI technologies.
  • Troubleshoot automation, orchestration, integration, and workflow-related issues.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, QA, and DevOps teams.
  • Help identify reusable automation and workflow patterns across customers and industries.
  • Research emerging AI, automation, and Agentic Operations technologies.
Job Requirements:

  • Familiarity with APIs, JSON, web services, and basic system integration concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Internship, academic, or project experience involving automation, AI, workflows, or software engineering.
  • Familiarity with OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, or other Generative AI technologies.
  • Experience using GitHub Copilot or other AI-assisted coding tools.
  • Exposure to workflow automation, RPA, low-code, BPM, or orchestration platforms.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
  • Exposure to Agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Interest in operational AI, Intelligent Agents, and Agentic Operations.
  • Experience with TypeScript, Angular, Java, or Python is beneficial.
What Success Looks Like
  • Learns quickly and contributes meaningfully to customer solutions and platform innovation.
  • Builds scalable and maintainable Intelligent Agents, robotic workers, and AI-powered workflows.
  • Collaborates effectively across customers and internal teams.
  • Helps customers improve operational efficiency and future-of-work readiness.
  • Continuously improves technical, automation, and AI-related skills.
  • Contributes to HuLoop’s mission of radically simplifying work optimization.
Equal Employment Opportunity Company:
  • HuLoop is an Equal Employment Opportunity company that offers an excellent benefit package that includes Medical, Dental, Vision and 401K. The company also offers paid vacation, holidays, and sick time.
