What is a build release engineer?

Build Release Engineers are IT professionals responsible for managing, automating, and improving the processes involved in building, packaging, and releasing software applications. They work closely with development, quality assurance, and operations teams to ensure that code is compiled, tested, and deployed efficiently and reliably. Their role often involves configuring build tools, maintaining version control systems, and creating scripts to automate deployment pipelines. By streamlining these processes, Build Release Engineers help deliver software updates faster while minimizing errors and downtime.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a build release engineer?

To thrive as a Build Release Engineer, you need strong knowledge of software development processes, version control systems, and scripting languages, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools like Jenkins, Git, Docker, and automation frameworks is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure reliable software delivery, minimize deployment risks, and facilitate collaboration between development and operations teams.

What are common challenges faced by build release engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Build Release Engineers often encounter challenges such as complex dependency management, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring smooth, automated deployment processes. To address these, it's important to maintain clear documentation, implement robust CI/CD pipelines, and proactively communicate with developers, QA, and operations teams. Continuous learning and staying updated with the latest automation tools can also help streamline workflows and reduce deployment issues.

Job description

We are looking for the right people - people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

About Landmark

Landmark, a Halliburton company, builds the software and data solutions that help the global energy industry make better decisions. Our products span subsurface interpretation, well construction planning, reservoir simulation, production optimization, and digital operations. These are tools used daily by engineers and scientists at the world's largest energy companies and run as cloud-native SaaS and as enterprise on-premises solutions.

Job Duties

You lead one or more development teams through complex, multi-quarter delivery work on software the E&P industry depends on. The role sits at the intersection of three demands: technical excellence, software delivery, and people leadership. You set technical direction and stay one of the strongest engineers in your area. You own delivery: what the teams ship and how reliably they ship it. You develop and lead the engineers who report to you.

The role suits a senior software engineer with proven team leadership experience, or an experienced team lead ready to take on broader scope and formal people management. Your scope varies with the work: a single larger team, a team owning a technically demanding or unfamiliar area, or multiple teams building one product.

Strong software engineering fundamentals, proven software delivery leadership, and the ability to develop the engineers around you are all required. Domain knowledge is valuable but not required at hire.

Positions are available across a range of teams. Team assignment determines both the product domain and the technologies used.

Teams build software for domains such as:

  • Geoscience - geology, geophysics, or petrophysics
  • Drilling engineering and well planning
  • Reservoir engineering and modeling
  • Production engineering and optimization
  • E&P data management and integration
  • Cloud infrastructure, data services, and developer tooling
  • AI-assisted analytics, search, and generative AI

Technologies used vary by team and include:

  • Languages such as Java, C#, F#, C++, Python, TypeScript, and Fortran
  • Frameworks and runtimes such as .NET, Eclipse RCP/SWT, JUnit, Angular, React, and Node.js
  • Cloud providers including Azure and AWS
  • Containerization and orchestration tooling such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Helm, and Argo CD/Flux

Relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, and MongoDB

What You Will Do

You lead one or more development teams through complex, multi-quarter delivery work and stay close enough to the technology to make the hardest decisions yourself. The work has two dimensions, and you do both every day.

Set technical direction and solve hard problems
  • Shape the architecture and technical roadmap of the products you own, and make decisions that hold up across multiple releases
  • Scope major technical work: estimate effort, identify risks, and define the delivery approach
  • Serve as the first technical escalation point when hard problems surface in your area: architectural disagreements, production issues, and deep technical unknowns
  • Evaluate architecture and implementation for performance, scalability, and security weaknesses, and see improvements through to resolution
  • Challenge the delivery process when it produces slow feedback, unnecessary risk, or poor outcomes
  • Stay current on tools, practices, and technologies relevant to your area, and lead adoption where they improve the product
Lead teams and develop people
  • Work directly with Product Management and architects to design new applications and major enhancements, and translate product goals into concrete technical plans
  • Manage stakeholder relationships and communicate delivery status, technical trade-offs, and risks upward
  • Define how your teams work and how they coordinate: delivery cadence, ownership boundaries within and between teams, and the bar for hiring and promotion
  • Staff teams effectively by matching people to work based on skill, growth need, and delivery priority
  • Manage and mentor the engineers and mid-level team leads on your teams through performance reviews, development plans, career conversations, and honest feedback
  • Set and enforce code quality, security, and architectural standards across your teams through reviews, direct feedback, and the technical culture you build
  • Own the technical debt in your area: decide what actually matters, get it into the delivery plan, and see it resolved
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 10 or more years of software development experience, including proven experience leading the technical delivery of a software team and managing people (performance, development, hiring)
  • Deep proficiency in at least one of: Java, C#/F# (.NET), C++, Python, or TypeScript (React, Angular, or Node.js), with a track record of delivering production software in that stack
  • Experience designing and owning the architecture of a complex software system or major subsystem, with technical decisions that held up across multiple releases
  • Experience owning performance management, development planning, and hiring for a team
  • Communication skills sharp enough to discuss delivery outcomes with business stakeholders, architectural trade-offs with engineers, and career development with the people on your team
  • Ability to lead delivery across distributed, cross-timezone teams
Preferred
  • Experience leading multiple teams that together deliver a single product or technology
  • Experience with cloud-native development or data engineering technologies in addition to core language proficiency
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and infrastructure automation
  • Experience leading teams in technically complex or scientifically demanding application domains
  • Experience integrating machine learning, generative AI, or LLM-based components into production systems
  • Experience developing other team leads and senior engineers into stronger leaders
  • Experience contributing to open-source projects, or integrating open-source components at scale

Energy industry experience is not required but is a strong plus. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and encourage you to apply even if your experience does not match every item in the preferred list.

How You Work

The senior team lead who succeeds in this role leads at the level of teams and multi-quarter outcomes, not just the current release. You earn trust through the quality of your technical judgment and the way you carry hard conversations, not by pulling rank. You stay close to the code and to the people, and you use both connections to make better decisions about what your teams commit to, how they execute, and who they hire. You develop other team leads, not only other engineers, because your reach depends on the people you have grown to run their own scope. Your impact shows up in the commitments your teams meet and in the leaders they become.

Why Landmark

We build small, high-ownership teams and invest in the quality of every person on them. You will work in a business where software is the product, the work you do matters, and the standards are high. As a Senior Team Lead, you set direction across complex work, stay close enough to the code to make good decisions, and own both delivery outcomes and the growth of the engineers on your teams.

Landmark offers competitive compensation including bonus and long-term incentive programs.
