What Is a Build Engineer?

A build engineer, sometimes called a build and release engineer or release engineer, is a computer software engineer who is focused mainly on developing a line from a program’s source code to a publically available product. In the development of modern computer applications, code is rarely written from scratch. Instead, build or DevOps engineers find open source code and facilitate the integration of different sources into a workable piece of software. They do this by using code to connect the various sources together.

How does a Build Engineer typically collaborate with development and QA teams during the software release process?

Build Engineers play a central role in bridging the gap between development and QA teams. They are responsible for setting up and maintaining continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, ensuring that builds are stable and ready for testing. Build Engineers often coordinate with developers to troubleshoot integration issues and with QA teams to verify that releases meet quality standards. This collaboration helps streamline the release process, reduce deployment errors, and ensure that software is delivered efficiently and reliably.

Job description

The Software Foundations and Management organization within Amazon Web Services (AWS) at Amazon is looking for talented engineers to join its Managed Applications Platform (MAP) organization. Our team owns the software and systems that help Amazon's massive developer community build the critical services and technology that Amazon is known for. Our systems deliver the technology that powers fully-automated deployments, OS upgrades, OS patching and dynamic fleet scaling for some of the world's largest services. Through a fully-automated continuous deployment workflow, Amazon engineers can bring code changes and new features to the customer, or dynamically shape the size of their fleet, all because of the magic we provide. MAP makes it possible for every developer at Amazon to rapidly change their running applications without ever having to take an outage.
MAP's suite of products are at the core of how engineers work at Amazon. Every engineer uses them every day. In MAP, everything we do goes into production and is instantly used by tens of thousands of other engineers. What we do makes a difference, and we're not done yet! We are looking for developers who are passionate about making managing applications in the cloud work for everyone. We have so much more we want to do. Interested in providing containers and serverless infrastructure to Amazon engineers, not just using them? We should talk.
If you have what we're looking for, come join a strong team in a highly-visible organization. You will have a significant impact on Amazon and help us to build the best continuous deployment and fleet management system in the world. Help us to write the next generation of systems that controls the software on millions of servers, for tens of thousands of applications, while delivering on the promise of elastic capacity at Amazon scale. We want to make it as easy as possible for application owners to create rapid change, and we need developers who are excited to make managing applications in the cloud work for everyone.

- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
