What is a buddy?

Buddies in the workplace are experienced employees assigned to help new hires settle into their roles and the company culture. They provide guidance, answer questions, and offer informal support during the onboarding process. The buddy system helps new employees feel welcome, accelerates their learning, and can improve job satisfaction and retention. Buddies typically share insights about company processes, social norms, and available resources, making the transition smoother for newcomers.

What are the typical responsibilities and expectations of a buddy in a workplace onboarding program?

As a workplace 'Buddy,' your primary responsibilities include helping new hires acclimate to the organization by providing guidance on company policies, answering day-to-day questions, and introducing them to key team members. Buddies serve as approachable points of contact, supporting new employees in navigating both formal procedures and informal workplace culture. The role often involves regular check-ins during the first few weeks, offering advice, and ensuring that the new hire feels welcomed and supported. Effective Buddies are patient, empathetic, and proactive in fostering a positive onboarding experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a buddy, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Buddy, you need strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and the ability to provide support and encouragement, though no formal qualifications are typically required. Familiarity with communication tools or platforms, such as instant messaging or scheduling apps, may be helpful depending on the context.
