Job description

Job Summary

As a key member of the Bethel Kitchen Team, the Kitchen Assistant ensures our daily operations and catering projects run seamlessly. Working directly with the Kitchen Manager, you’ll help uphold the highest standards of food quality and hospitality. This fast paced role is perfect for a detail oriented professional with a passion for food, strong leadership potential, and the communication skills to thrive in a collaborative environment.

Hours: 0-9 hours per week

Job Requirements

Food Preparation & Service

  • Prepare menu items following established recipes, portion sizes, and safety standards.
  • Support the Kitchen Manager across all stages of service: shopping, cooking, delivery, setup, and cleanup.
  • Ensure catering orders are staged accurately and delivered on time.
  • Inspect all deliveries for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Guarantee all food products are handled and stored in strict accordance with sanitation guidelines.

Inventory & Quality Control

  • Monitor inventory levels and proactively notify management of replenishment needs.
  • Partner with the Kitchen Manager and Head Chef to conduct quality checks, maintaining consistent standards and adjusting dishes as needed.

Kitchen Operations & Organization

  • Maintain a pristine, organized workspace, including proper storage of ingredients and equipment.
  • Execute daily cleaning and closing procedures to ensure a high standard of kitchen hygiene.

Teamwork & Leadership

  • Collaborate with kitchen staff and lead volunteer teams to ensure smooth coordination for weekly tasks and special events.
  • Provide clear direction and support to volunteers, fostering a positive, productive environment.
  • Communicate effectively across departments to facilitate seamless operations.


Minimum Requirements

    • Previous experience in a kitchen or food production environment.
    • High School diploma
    • Basic knowledge of food safety, ability to follow recipes with precision, and strong attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication, teamwork, and the flexibility to thrive in a fast paced environment.
    • Stamina to stand for extended periods and perform kitchen tasks.
    • This position does not qualify for sponsorship of work authorization or an employment visa, so candidates must be legally qualified to work in the U.S. for this position.
    • Ability to meet the physical requirements of this position (see attached)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid CA Food Handler’s Certificate

  • Degree or certification in Culinary Arts or Hospitality.

  • Experience in large scale catering or institutional food programs.

  • Proven ability to lead volunteer teams in a ministry or nonprofit setting.

  • Experience with menu innovation and cost effective planning.
