Job description

Obstetric (OB) Clinical Instructor – Practical Nurse/Registered

Department: Education. Reports to the Director of Clinical Operations.

Overview

As an expert in the clinical setting, the instructor imparts the knowledge and skills that students need to be successful, ensuring they achieve competence in the course objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver clinical, lecture, and/or laboratory instruction based on approved course outlines.
  • Assess student learning using appropriate methods, demonstrating strong outcomes in retention, success, and attendance.
  • Instruct students in the principles and application of physical, biological, and psychological subjects related to the PN/RN role.
  • Plan and coordinate daily learning experiences that individualize both student and client needs.
  • Provide guidance on problem‑solving, communication, and cultural sensitivity across diverse populations.
  • Participate in campus‑wide orientation of RN/PN students and supervise ongoing clinical performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ time, attendance, evaluations, and progress.
  • Complete notes to file as directed and report concerns to the Director of Clinical Operations.
  • Collaborate with Directors of Clinical Operations, Academic Clinical Liaison, and Nursing to monitor student progress.
  • Work with medical and nursing personnel to evaluate and improve teaching techniques throughout externship modules.
  • Make recommendations for improvement of the clinical experience and help develop procedures, protocols, and forms.
  • Ensure compliance with campus policies and instructional preparedness.
  • Participate in faculty, staff, committee, and in‑service meetings; attend seminars, conventions, and vendor shows for professional growth.
  • Ensure all educational activity is conducted legally and ethically; maintain employer relationships at least annually.
  • Facilitate all clinical courses in OB when required, except pediatrics unless experienced.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Current, unencumbered Michigan licensure as a registered nurse (RN); experience in obstetrics required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing science (BSN) or an associate degree in nursing actively pursuing a BSN.
  • Documented enrollment in a BSN program if holding an ADN.
  • One year of documented clinical teaching experience related to the course taught (preferred).
  • Strong verbal and written communication and active listening skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team, with strong time‑management and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficient with basic office equipment and computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Working/Physical Demands

The role may require occasional late hours and weekends. The employee must regularly see, talk, and hear; stand, walk, and sit for extended periods; and possess sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate phones, keyboards, and other office equipment.
