To thrive as a Computer Science graduate, you need strong analytical thinking, programming proficiency, and a solid grasp of algorithms and data structures, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are highly valued. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in collaborative and dynamic tech environments. These capabilities enable you to design, develop, and maintain robust software solutions that meet real-world needs.

What types of entry-level roles are commonly available to graduates with a BS in Computer Science, and how can I identify which path aligns with my interests?

Graduates with a BS in Computer Science often find entry-level opportunities as software developers, QA engineers, data analysts, IT support specialists, or web developers. To determine which path best suits your interests, consider the subjects you enjoyed most during your studies, such as programming, databases, or networking, and look for roles that emphasize those skills. Internships, personal projects, and participation in coding communities can also provide valuable insight into various specializations, helping you make a more informed decision as you start your career.

Job description

Job Description
Data Scientist - Supply Chain Analytics
As a Data Scientist on the Supply Chain Analytical Solutions team, you'll contribute to solving complex supply chain challenges that directly impact how products move from warehouses to customers. You will partner with business, technology, data engineering, and analytics teams to translate supply chain opportunities into data-driven insights, models, and decision-support solutions that deliver measurable business value. A strong candidate will have hands-on experience applying data science and operations research methods to real-world business problems, with the ability to work through ambiguity, communicate findings clearly, and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical partners.
This role is hybrid, which means you will be required to work some days on-site at the Best Buy location listed on this posting and some days virtually from home or another non-Best Buy location. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.
What you'll do
  • Apply statistical modeling, machine learning, optimization, simulation, forecasting, and other data science and operations research techniques to solve supply chain problems.
  • Source, clean, transform, interpret, and analyze large structured and unstructured data sets to generate insights and inform operational decisions that lead to better outcomes.
  • Actively work to identify improvements to internal processes, to improve analytical outcomes, and drive enterprise KPIs.
  • Collaborate with a team of decision and data scientists and interact with cross-functional partners to ensure accurate, timely, and impactful delivery of projects.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Best Buy's supply chain operations and serve as a trusted partner in identifying opportunities where analytics can meaningfully improve operational outcomes.
  • Craft compelling presentations to communicate analytical findings, model results, business implications, and recommendations to technical teams, business stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Explore and apply emerging analytics methods and technologies to advance supply chain capabilities.

Basic qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, operations research, industrial engineering or a related quantitative field
  • Working knowledge of various analytical and statistical methods (i.e., data analysis, statistics, operations research, and/or machine learning) with application to business problems.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in data science or quantitative field, including 1+ years of applied or industry experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience using data analytics (e.g., SQL, Python, R), and machine learning and/or optimization tools (i.e., Python, R, Gurobi, Vertex AI).
  • 1+ years hands-on experience working on large structured and unstructured data environments

Preferred qualifications
  • Master's or PhD in a quantitative discipline (Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or similar).
  • 1+ years of experience in the retail industry with focus on order lifecycle, final mile fulfillment, logistics and warehouse operations.
  • Familiarity with and hands-on application of more than one analytical or modeling paradigm, such as optimization, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, simulation, or other operations research techniques, applied to real-world business problems.
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams.
