Job description

Physician (NS)

Broughton Hospital, a State Psychiatric Hospital serving the Western Region of NC, is recruiting for a permanent full-time Physicians (Internal Medicine/Family Practice Physicians). Our 24 hour in-patient facility serves adolescent, adult, deaf and geriatric patients. Hours 8:00am -5:00pm Monday through Friday. On-call as scheduled. Respond to code blue during 0800-1700 and when on call. The primary purpose of this a physician is to render medical care to physically ill patients in Broughton Hospital. This position also provides service to Employee Health Services such as treatment of medical emergency, clearance of employees to return to work after illness as needed. The position supervises Physician Extenders directly under their license and co-supervises other remaining Physician Extenders. The range of patients' age served by this position varies from adolescents to the geriatric population. Coverage encompasses the entire hospital for medical emergencies while on call. This position will be responsible for Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) and Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPE) in addition to the NCVIP (NC Valuing Individual Performance) for subordinate staff. Additional responsibilities will include screening referrals for admission for acceptance for evaluation based on the patient's medical stability.

Clinical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides medical services to assigned caseload and makes daily rounds on assigned units.
  • Assess and evaluate the physical findings, laboratory and radiographic studies and any other studies and consultations and translate those evaluations into orders and other communications to staff.
  • Directs ongoing management of medical conditions throughout the patients' hospitalization.
  • Completes patient History and Physical Assessments.
  • Respond to and participate in the management of medical emergencies for all client groups experiencing acute medical decompensation.
  • Collaborates with treatment teams to effectively exchange medically significant information, and takes a leadership role in creating treatment plans.
  • Provides service to Employee Health such as treatment of medical emergencies and clearance of employees to return to work after illness, as needed.
  • Supervises Physician Extenders directly under this position's license and co-supervises other remaining Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners.

Recruitment Range: $147,932.00 - $295,863.00

*A Sign-on bonus of $20,000 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting, contingent on the 2025-2026 Budget Approval.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of medicine and completion of residency. Required license: full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in NC.
  • Board certification by American Board of Internal Medicine or American Board of Family Practice.

Conditional Requirements: Selected applicants must be able to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, and complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.

*Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

To qualify for the Sign-on Bonus, a newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time employee must work 30 to 40 hours per week to be eligible. Those who are eligible and working less than 40 hours a week will receive a prorated rate.

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

  • The employee has held a position in the North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system, within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date)
  • The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency
  • DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF). With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.
