Job description

Nexstar Media Chicago is a powerhouse in linear TV and streaming, operating 5 studios, 3 control rooms, and 5 streaming studios producing live content around the clock. NewsNation reaches 75 million households nationwide, and WGN-TV is Chicago's #1 local station. Our brands also include Antenna TV and Rewind TV.

We're seeking a full-time Broadcast Maintenance Engineer with strong IT skills to join our engineering team. You'll provide daily maintenance and technical operational support for a large, complex broadcast facility, ensuring all broadcast systems, technology, and live day-of-air programs maintain on-air reliability across traditional and digital platforms. This position requires a combination of maintenance, I.T. and project management/system engineering skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and troubleshoot broadcast and IT systems, including studio/control room automation, master control, ENPS newsroom, cameras, audio gear, and streaming encoders.

  • Configure and troubleshoot IP networking for servers and broadcast equipment.

  • Diagnose signal flow and data flow issues; interpret schematics and system drawings.

  • Strong hands-on problem-solving skills with broadcast-related equipment and systems.

  • Support remote feed technologies (Dejero, TVU, Haivision) and streaming workflows.

  • Support and assist studio operations within a live production environment.

  • Collaborate with engineering team to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Collaborate with production and operations team to execute technical solutions that meet production needs in a timely fashion.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of IP networking (LAN/VLAN/WAN/VPN), Active Directory, Windows/Linux platforms.

  • Proficiency with broadcast production systems and software, including audio consoles, intercom systems, video switchers, wireless audio, and test and measurement equipment.

  • Familiarity with broadcast systems: Ross Xpression/Tessera, LED videowalls, Dante audio, satellite transmission.

  • Ability to use network tools (ping, traceroute) and common test equipment (signal generators, scopes).

  • Understanding of video compression, resolutions (e.g., 1080i) and bandwidth requirements.

  • Ability to read and understand technical system signal flow diagrams for studio facilities.

  • Strong hands-on problem-solving skills with broadcast-related equipment and systems.

  • Excellent written and communication skills, with the ability to diplomatically engage with colleagues across various departments.

  • Proficiency in newsroom and production environments, especially software driven.

  • Manage projects, design systems, and assist with system integration and commissioning.

Requirements:

  • Five (5) years' experience as an IT technician or maintenance engineer in a media facility is desired.

  • An Associate or Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline is a plus.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Knowledge of common business software applications.

  • This position will require shift work which may include nights, weekends, and holidays, along with overtime as situations will sometimes require.

  • This position requires membership in IBEW 1220.
