What are brewery operations?

Brewery operations refer to the processes and activities involved in producing beer or other brewed beverages on a commercial scale. This includes everything from sourcing raw ingredients like malt, hops, and yeast, to brewing, fermenting, conditioning, packaging, and distributing the final product. Brewery operations also cover quality control, equipment maintenance, regulatory compliance, and inventory management. Professionals in brewery operations ensure that each batch meets quality standards and that the brewery runs efficiently and safely.

What are some typical challenges faced in brewery operations and how can new team members successfully navigate them?

One of the most common challenges in brewery operations is maintaining product consistency while managing multiple batches and adhering to strict quality control standards. New team members may also need to quickly adapt to a fast-paced environment that involves physical labor, detailed record-keeping, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Success in this role often depends on strong communication with other departments such as packaging, logistics, and quality assurance, as well as a willingness to continuously learn and follow standard operating procedures. Being proactive about asking questions and seeking feedback from experienced colleagues can help new team members integrate smoothly and contribute effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in brewery operations, and why are they important?

To thrive in Brewery Operations, you need a solid understanding of brewing processes, quality control, and safety regulations, often supported by a degree in brewing science or related experience. Familiarity with brewing equipment, automation systems, and certifications like Cicerone or HACCP is typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail help individuals excel in managing production and ensuring product consistency. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining high-quality beer production, operational efficiency, and compliance with industry standards.

Job description

Overview
Who We Are
At BJ's, we've been bringing people together to celebrate life's moments since 1978. We're more than a restaurant; we're a team of craft-obsessed people who take serious pride in every pint. As a $1B company with 200+ locations, we offer the stability of a big player with the heart (and hops) of a local taproom. If you're energized by teamwork and ready to master the craft, you'll fit right in.
How You'll Contribute
As the Brewery Sanitation & Janitorial team member, you are the foundation of our brewing operation. Without a clean, sanitized brewery, great craft beer is impossible - and that's where you come in.
  • The Craft: A great brewery runs on a spotless floor. You are the reason our tanks, drains, equipment, and workspace meet high standards every single shift
  • The Work: Cleaning and sanitizing brewery equipment, tanks, fermenters, kegs, floors, and drains is the core of every shift. Expect 80-100% of your time spent in active sanitation and facility upkeep.
  • The Environment: Work in a variety of conditions - including warm production areas (100°F+ on the brew deck), cold storage and cellar spaces (35°F), elevated platforms, and around industrial cleaning chemicals.
  • The Shine: Safely handle, apply, and store commercial cleaning chemicals following all OSHA protocols, safety data sheets, and company procedures.
  • The Standards: Follow all brewery sanitation, food safety, health, and quality procedures. Accuracy and consistency in sanitation logs and records is required.
  • The Safety: Safety always comes first. Maintain a drug- and alcohol-free workplace in accordance with all company policies. Authorized quality tastings follow strict documented protocols only.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do
  • Perform daily and scheduled deep cleaning and sanitation of all brewery equipment, including brewing tanks, fermentation vessels, bright tanks, kegs, lines, pumps, and valves
  • Clean and sanitize brewery floors, drains, restrooms, and surrounding grounds in compliance with all health, safety, and food safety standards
  • Empty and properly dispose of all waste and trash per established safety and disposal protocols
  • Apply, handle, and store commercial cleaning chemicals - including caustic, acid, and sanitizer solutions - in strict accordance with safety data sheets (SDS) and OSHA guidelines; alert management when supplies need to be reordered
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date sanitation logs, cleaning checklists, and records for all areas and equipment
  • Operate cleaning equipment including pressure washers, floor scrubbers, and wet/dry vacuums safely and effectively
  • Work with the brewing team and management to identify and address maintenance needs, equipment breakage, or issues that affect production or safety
  • Maintain clean personal appearance and professional conduct at all times
  • Participate in mandatory training, safety meetings, and workshops
  • Ensure full compliance with all BJ's policies, procedures, health codes, and applicable laws at all times

Requirements
What You'll Bring
  • Age: Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Experience: 6 months prior experience in commercial cleaning, brewery sanitation, janitorial services, or a comparable food-production or manufacturing environment preferred
  • Chemical Knowledge: Ability to safely handle, read safety data sheets for, and apply commercial cleaning and sanitizing chemicals
  • Physical Readiness: Must be able to stand, walk, reach, bend, and kneel repeatedly throughout an entire shift; ability to lift up to 60 pounds on a semi-regular basis; able to work in extreme temperatures on the same shift (35°F cold storage / 100°F+ production areas)
  • Reliability: Dependable attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct - every shift, every time
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow written procedures and SOPs exactly; meticulous approach to cleanliness and compliance
  • Communication: Ability to read, write, and communicate in English; ability to understand and follow safety labels, SDS sheets, and documented procedures
  • Team Orientation: Works well in a collaborative, fast-paced brewery environment; supports the brewing team as a critical part of the production operation

What's In It For You?
  • Pay range: $ 18- $22 /hour
  • Perk: Dining Card and team member meal benefits to enjoy BJ's food during breaks or on your days off (benefits may vary by role and location).
  • Meals: Free and discounted meals to enjoy with your family and friends
  • Growth: Build your career - many of our brewery team members have advanced into Brewing roles. We love promoting from within.
  • Skill: Become an expert in food-safe sanitation, chemical handling, and brewery operations - a specialized skill set valued across the food and beverage industry.

This salary range reflects the anticipated compensation for this role. Final salary within the range will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, relevant experience, and other job-related qualifications.
