What is a breast imaging radiologist?

A Breast Imaging Radiologist is a medical doctor specializing in diagnosing breast diseases using imaging techniques such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. They play a crucial role in detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages and may also perform procedures like biopsies. These radiologists work closely with other healthcare providers to ensure accurate diagnoses and guide treatment decisions. Their expertise is essential in promoting breast health and early detection, improving patient outcomes.

What does a breast imaging radiologist do?

A typical workday for a Breast Imaging Radiologist involves interpreting mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and MRIs, performing image-guided biopsies, and consulting with referring physicians regarding diagnostic findings. You will often discuss results and next steps with patients, sometimes providing real-time assessments during imaging appointments. Collaboration is common with multidisciplinary teams, including surgeons, oncologists, and technologists. The balance between direct patient interactions and image analysis provides both variety and the opportunity to make a significant impact on early detection and treatment planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a breast imaging radiologist?

To thrive as a Breast Imaging Radiologist, you need a medical degree with board certification in radiology and specialized fellowship training in breast imaging, along with expertise in interpreting mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. Proficiency with advanced imaging software, PACS systems, and familiarity with image-guided biopsy procedures are essential. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a reassuring bedside manner help foster trust and clarity with patients and healthcare teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering accurate diagnoses and effective care, ultimately improving patient outcomes in breast health.

How to be a breast imaging radiologist?

To become a breast imaging radiologist, one must complete medical school, followed by a residency in radiology, and then pursue a fellowship in breast imaging. Certification by passing the American Board of Radiology exam and maintaining ongoing education are also required to practice in this specialized field.

What type of breast imaging radiologist makes the most money?

Among breast imaging radiologists, those with subspecialty certifications, extensive experience, and working in high-demand or private practice settings tend to earn higher salaries. Factors such as advanced skills in MRI or 3D mammography and working in metropolitan areas can also increase earning potential.

Breast Imaging Radiologist
StartDate: ASAP Pay Rate: $450000.00 - $600000.00

The University of Utah Health is seeking a fellowship-trained Breast Imaging Radiologist to join its expanding Breast Imaging Division within a nationally recognized, NCI-designated cancer center.

This opportunity offers the ability to practice full-spectrum breast imaging across a highly integrated academic and community-based system, supported by advanced technology, a collaborative faculty team, and strong institutional investment in continued growth.

Opportunity Highlights:

  • Practice within a nationally recognized, NCI-designated cancer center with fully integrated multidisciplinary breast care
  • Full-scope breast imaging including mammography (2D/3D tomosynthesis), ultrasound, breast MRI, and image-guided procedures
  • Structured weekly rotations across diagnostics, screening, MRI, and biopsy services

  • Collaborative faculty team of fellowship-trained breast radiologists supported by experienced advanced practice staff
  • Academic environment with teaching, mentorship, research, and multidisciplinary conference participation
  • Optional compensated weekend or off-hours reading for additional income
  • Recruitment driven by program growth and major capital investment (new hospitals and cancer center expansion)

Practice Environment:

The daily workflow includes a balance of diagnostic imaging, screening, MRI interpretation, and image-guided procedures, with predictable volumes and structured ramp-up for new faculty.

  • Faculty group of experienced breast radiologists with varied tenure and career stages
  • Dedicated breast imaging practiceโ€”no dilution with general radiology responsibilities
  • Integrated care model with surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, and supportive services
  • High-functioning workflows supported by Epic EMR and trainee involvement in select reads

Advanced Imaging & Clinical Capabilities:

  • Comprehensive imaging services including mammography, MRI, ultrasound, CT, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology
  • Strong emphasis on patient safety and quality, including low-dose imaging technology and dedicated physics support
  • Fully integrated cancer care environment supporting second-opinion services and complex case management

Academic Environment:

Faculty are supported in developing academic interests while maintaining a sustainable clinical structure.

  • Active teaching program with residents and dedicated breast imaging fellows
  • Opportunities for:
    • Teaching and mentorship
    • Research and clinical innovation
    • Multidisciplinary tumor boards and second-opinion review

Growth & Expansion:

This is a growth-driven opportunity, not a replacement role offering long-term stability and meaningful program-building involvement.

  • New community hospital and imaging expansion underway
  • New comprehensive cancer center and clinical/research facilities planned
  • Increasing regional demand across a broad referral network spanning the Intermountain West
