What is a BRC?

BRC typically stands for 'British Retail Consortium,' which is an organization that sets global standards for food safety, packaging, consumer products, and storage and distribution. In the context of job titles, a 'BRC' often refers to roles related to ensuring compliance with these standards, such as BRC auditor or BRC coordinator. These professionals are responsible for implementing and maintaining safety and quality management systems in line with BRC requirements, conducting internal audits, and preparing for external certification audits. Their work ensures that businesses meet legal, regulatory, and customer requirements for product safety and quality.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a BRC?

To thrive as a Business Resilience Consultant, you need a strong background in risk management, business continuity planning, and crisis management, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like CBCI or ISO 22301 Lead Implementer. Familiarity with business continuity software, risk assessment tools, and regulatory compliance systems is typically required. Excellent communication, analytical thinking, and stakeholder management make someone stand out in this role. These skills are essential to help organizations prepare for and respond to disruptions, ensuring operational resilience and business continuity.

What are common challenges faced by BRC professionals when working with cross-functional teams?

BRC professionals often collaborate with various departments, such as IT, HR, and operations, to ensure organizational resilience. One common challenge is aligning diverse teams with different priorities and levels of awareness about resilience planning. Communication and stakeholder engagement are key, as BRCs must translate technical concepts into actionable plans for non-specialist teams. Building consensus and ensuring consistent participation across departments can require strong relationship-building and project management skills.
