What does a Brazing job involve?

A brazing job involves joining metal components by melting a filler metal that flows into the joint without melting the base metals. Brazing is commonly used in industries like automotive, aerospace, and HVAC for creating strong, leak-proof connections. Workers in this role use torches, furnaces, or induction heating to perform the brazing process. Skills required include precision, knowledge of metal properties, and experience with heating equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Brazing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in brazing, a strong grasp of metalworking principles, precision hand-eye coordination, and familiarity with different metals and filler materials are essential, often supported by vocational training or apprenticeships. Technical expertise in using brazing torches, ovens, fluxes, and safety equipment, along with certifications like AWS Certified Brazing, is highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure high-quality work and safe collaboration with team members. These skills and attributes are crucial because brazing demands accuracy, safety, and teamwork to produce reliable, defect-free joints in manufacturing and repair applications.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in a brazing position?

A typical day for a brazing professional involves preparing metal parts, setting up and operating brazing equipment, applying fluxes, and monitoring the joining process to maintain quality standards. You may spend time interpreting blueprints or technical drawings, conducting inspections on finished pieces, and collaborating closely with welders, machinists, and quality control teams. The work environment can range from manufacturing plants to repair shops, often requiring adherence to strict safety protocols. As you gain experience, you'll have opportunities to take on more complex assignments or advance into supervisory or quality assurance roles.

Job description

Job Description Summary
The aerospace industry demands advanced manufacturing processes to produce high-performance components that meet stringent safety, quality, and reliability standards. Brazing and joining of aerospace alloys are critical processes for assembling complex parts, such as turbine blades, heat exchangers, and structural components, where precision and material integrity are paramount. As GE Aerospace continues to scale new engine programs, expand services, and develop future technologies, the need for specialized expertise in brazing and joining is essential to ensure Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) objectives are met.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Process Development and Optimization:
  • Design, develop, and optimize brazing and joining processes for aerospace alloys, including nickel, titanium, and aluminum-based materials.
  • Ensure processes meet stringent aerospace quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, including work instructions and standard operating procedures.

Technical Leadership:
  • Provide technical expertise in brazing techniques, including vacuum brazing, furnace brazing, and induction brazing.
  • Proficiency in welding aerospace-grade materials, including nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, aluminum alloys, and stainless steels.
  • Understanding of material behavior during welding, including thermal expansion, distortion, and metallurgical changes.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for manufacturing challenges related to brazing and joining operations.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and materials in brazing and joining.
  • Knowledge of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, such as X-ray, ultrasonic, and dye penetrant testing, to verify weld integrity.

Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify and implement lean manufacturing principles to improve process efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance productivity.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for process-related issues.
  • Collaborate with the FLIGHT DECK team to align with GE Aerospace's proprietary lean operating model.

New Product Introduction (NPI):
  • Support the introduction of new products by developing robust brazing and joining processes.
  • Partner with design engineering teams to ensure manufacturability of new designs.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments for new processes.
  • Oversee MRL development.

Compliance and Safety:
  • Ensure all brazing and joining processes comply with aerospace industry standards, including AS9100 and NADCAP requirements.
  • Promote a culture of safety and ensure adherence to all safety protocols.

Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design engineering, quality, supply chain, and operations.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Communicate technical updates and project progress to stakeholders.
