The Social Media Intern plays a key role in advancing the KU Memorial Unions brand by creating engaging digital and social media content and strategies. This position will contribute to the marketing team’s efforts to reflect the Union’s Mission, values and principles in their digital presence and in person. The multimedia intern brings creativity, enthusiasm, and a strong understanding of social media trends to develop content that connects with the campus audience and strengthens the Union’s online presence. The intern will have strong writing and communication skills to help effectively convey the Union’s voice and communicate well with the campus community.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

The KU Memorial Unions serve as vibrant community hubs for the University of Kansas, bringing students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests together through dining, retail, events, programs, services, and welcoming spaces across campus.

As a Social Media Intern, you’ll have the opportunity to build your professional portfolio while creating content that reaches the KU community. You’ll gain hands-on experience with social media, digital marketing, copywriting, photography, video production, email marketing, and event coverage while working alongside the KU Memorial Unions marketing team.

  • Write Engaging Copy: Create social media captions, email content, event descriptions, and other marketing copy that reflects the KU Memorial Unions brand voice.
  • Engage with the Campus Community: Attend campus events outside of regularly scheduled shifts, including some evenings and weekends as needed, to support outreach and represent the KU Memorial Unions brand. Provide live social media coverage of events when appropriate.
  • Support Email Marketing: Create engaging email content for students, faculty, parents, and other members of the KU community.
  • Support Social Media Growth: Develop creative ideas and strategies to grow social media audiences, increase engagement, and strengthen the KU Memorial Unions' digital presence.
  • Edit Digital Content: Edit Reels, TikToks, photographs, and other multimedia content for use across digital platforms.
  • Stay Current on Campus Trends: Keep up with campus news, events, trends, and other relevant topics to identify opportunities for timely and engaging content.
  • Manage Projects: Organize daily assignments and project needs using Asana and communicate progress, deadlines, and priorities with the marketing team.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Team: Contribute ideas, participate in planning, and work collaboratively to support marketing initiatives and organizational priorities.

Pay Rate: The anticipated pay for this position starts at $12.00. The final rate will be determined based on qualifications, experience, education, and years within the job or industry.

Schedule: Part-time, primarily Monday–Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with some evenings and weekends as needed and with advance notice.

What You’ll Bring

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to confidently engage with others in a dynamic campus environment.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, particularly Instagram and TikTok, and a strong understanding of current social media trends and best practices.
  • Comfort being on camera, including taking photographs and participating in video content.
  • Demonstrated experience or practice in copywriting, content creation, and editing.
  • Experience or practice conducting street-style or professional interviews.
  • Knowledge of strategies and best practices for growing a social media following and increasing audience engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating short-form video content for Instagram Reels, TikTok, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with photography, video editing, or other multimedia content creation.
  • Experience creating content for a college, university, student organization, or other campus-focused audience.
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms or digital marketing tools.
  • Experience using project management platforms such as Asana.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a professional office setting and may include regular travel between KU Memorial Unions locations and other on-campus locations to support marketing activities and events. The position requires flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to adjust to changing priorities and respond to job-related needs on short notice.

The position may require attendance at campus events outside of regularly scheduled shifts, including occasional evenings and weekends, with advance notice.
