What is a brand inspector?

Brand Inspectors are professionals responsible for verifying the ownership and proper identification of livestock, such as cattle and horses, by checking brands or other identification marks. Their main duties include inspecting animals at sales, auctions, or during transport to prevent theft and ensure lawful transactions. Brand Inspectors play a critical role in upholding the integrity of the livestock industry and protecting ranchers from loss due to stolen or misidentified animals.

What does a brand inspector do?

Brand inspectors work with livestock and livestock products, such as pelts, wool, hides, or carcasses in the agriculture industry. In this role, you travel to different farms and other organizations that raise or sell livestock during private sales, auctions, or sales to a slaughterhouse. Your primary responsibilities are to review documentation, such as shipping manifests or bills of sale, to verify ownership of the farm animals and inspect the physical brands on each animal or animal materials. You may also be required to check other forms of documentation. For example, a brand inspector checks vaccination records of the animal and verifies the credentials, insurance, and bonding of buyers and sellers during a transaction. Brand inspectors may work for government agencies or private organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a brand inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Brand Inspector, you need a solid understanding of livestock identification, state regulations, and investigative procedures, often supported by experience in agriculture or law enforcement. Familiarity with livestock databases, inspection reporting software, and mobile communication devices is typically required. Strong attention to detail, integrity, and effective communication skills help build trust with ranchers and ensure accurate documentation. These skills are crucial for preventing livestock theft, ensuring legal compliance, and protecting the interests of producers and markets.

What are some common challenges faced by brand inspectors during fieldwork, and how can they be addressed?

Brand Inspectors often work in rural or remote locations and may face challenges such as inclement weather, difficult terrain, and handling uncooperative livestock or owners. Effective communication skills and a strong understanding of livestock handling are essential to navigate these situations professionally. Inspectors should also be well-versed in state regulations to ensure accurate identification and documentation. Building rapport with ranchers and staying organized helps streamline inspections and resolve disputes efficiently.

Job description

Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial mobility. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users, from utility inspectors to first responders, soldiers in battlefield scenarios and beyond.

About The Role

As our Senior Brand Designer, you’ll help shape and evolve Skydio’s visual identity across brand, product, and marketing experiences. You’ll translate complex, cutting‑edge technology into clear, compelling, and distinctive expressions and solutions that show up consistently—and beautifully—wherever our brand lives.

  • Location: San Mateo, CA (Hybrid: 3 days onsite/week)
  • Contract: Full‑time (40 hours/week) contract position, with potential to evolve based on business needs and mutual fit.
What You'll Do
  • Design across a wide range of brand and marketing deliverables—from concept through final execution.
  • Collaborate closely with Creative, Product, GTM, and Engineering partners to translate ideas into impactful visual experiences.
  • Help raise the overall bar for brand execution through strong taste, feedback, and attention to detail.
  • Partner with vendors—providing art direction and hands‑on design as needed.
  • Present design work clearly and confidently to stakeholders, incorporating feedback iteratively.
What Makes You a Good Fit

You’re a versatile, detail‑driven designer with a strong point of view and a deep appreciation for craft. You’re comfortable owning projects end‑to‑end, collaborating across disciplines, and adapting quickly as priorities evolve. Your portfolio demonstrates both conceptual strength and polished execution across digital and physical experiences.

  • 5+ years of brand or graphic design experience, either in‑house, at an agency, or both.
  • A portfolio showcasing a range of work—brand systems, campaigns, digital experiences, events, and physical collateral.
  • Strong conceptual thinking paired with meticulous design execution.
  • High fluency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop), plus comfort working in Google Slides and Keynote.
  • Experience collaborating with and guiding external partners such as agencies, fabricators, or production vendors.
  • A high bar for quality and consistency, with an eye for detail that elevates every deliverable.
  • A flexible, resilient mindset—you embrace iteration and thrive in fast‑moving environments.
  • A self‑starter who can manage multiple projects independently, balancing timelines and stakeholders with ease.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams.
Compensation

This is a temporary independent contractor (1099) position with an initial contract duration of six (6) months, with potential to extend or evolve. The hourly rate range is $80.00–$90.00 per hour, varying based on skill level, experience, and geographic location. This position is not eligible for company‑sponsored benefits. As an independent contractor, the individual is solely responsible for maintaining any required liability insurance, other applicable insurance coverage, benefits, and for payment of all applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
