What is a Brain Computer Interface job?

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) job involves developing systems that enable direct communication between the brain and external devices. Professionals in this field work on hardware and software to interpret neural signals, often for medical, assistive, or neurotechnology applications. Roles can include research, software engineering, signal processing, and machine learning to improve BCIs' accuracy and functionality. These jobs are common in healthcare, neuroscience, gaming, and AI-driven human augmentation industries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Brain Computer Interface roles?

Professionals in Brain Computer Interface roles often face challenges related to accurately interpreting complex neural signals, minimizing noise in data, and ensuring that BCI systems are intuitive for end-users. They frequently collaborate with neuroscientists, engineers, software developers, and clinicians to overcome technical and usability barriers. Balancing research innovation with real-world applicability can be demanding, and staying current with rapidly advancing technology is essential. These challenges make the field dynamic and rewarding for those passionate about shaping the future of human-computer interaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Brain Computer Interface position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Brain Computer Interface role, you typically need a strong background in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or computer science, coupled with experience in signal processing and neural data analysis. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, EEG/MEG systems, and relevant certifications in neurotechnology are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication skills are essential for working on multidisciplinary teams and translating research into practical applications. These skills ensure that you can design, develop, and refine advanced BCI systems that meet both technical and user needs in this rapidly evolving field.

Director / Sr. Director, R&D Operations & Technical Program Management

Subsense Inc.

Palo Alto, CA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 23 days ago

Job description

Job Summary:
Subsense Inc. is a deep-tech company developing a non-surgical brain-computer interface powered by advanced nanoparticles. They are seeking a Director/Sr. Director of R&D Operations & Technical Program Management to enhance R&D execution and ensure alignment across technical teams, while maintaining focus on strategic priorities.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Building, maintaining, and driving adoption of a clear R&D execution plan across priority workstreams
โ€ข Create a clear weekly picture of what is happening, what is blocked, what has changed, what decisions are needed, and whether critical milestones are on track
โ€ข Partner closely with the Head of R&D to protect leadership time and ensure focus remains on strategic, scientific, and technical priorities
โ€ข Translate complex R&D work into clear execution visibility for leadership, without oversimplifying the technical reality
โ€ข Track owners, milestones, dependencies, risks, decisions, and next actions across critical technical programs
โ€ข Surface blockers, trade-offs, and dependency risks early so they can be resolved before they slow execution
โ€ข Help team leads operate from one shared execution plan without adding unnecessary process or meetings
โ€ข Design lightweight operating rhythms that respect lab time, experiment windows, and deep technical work
โ€ข Use async updates, consolidated reporting, decision logs, and focused meetings to reduce coordination burden
โ€ข Coordinate across science, engineering, hardware, software, regulatory, operations, and leadership as needed
โ€ข Help leadership quickly understand whether company-critical and fundraising-critical milestones are on track
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข Proven experience managing complex technical programs, R&D initiatives, or multidisciplinary technical projects
โ€ข Strong technical fluency combined with the ability to quickly and intuitively understand multiple scientific and engineering domains; while no one person will know everything we are working on, you can rapidly grasp the most important concepts and connect them across disciplines
โ€ข Experience operating in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where priorities shift and the playbook is still being built
โ€ข Ability to influence senior technical people without relying on formal authority
โ€ข Strong execution discipline, including ownership of milestones, dependencies, risks, decisions, and follow-through
โ€ข Excellent written and verbal communication skills โ€” clear, concise, direct, and trusted by both technical teams and leadership
โ€ข Strong judgment about when to convene a meeting, when to handle alignment asynchronously, and when to escalate an issue
โ€ข Ability to create practical operating systems that improve efficiency while protecting lab time, experiment windows, and deep technical focus
โ€ข Low-ego, high-accountability working style
โ€ข Fluent spoken and written English
Preferred:
โ€ข Experience in neuroscience, biotech, medtech, nanotechnology, hardware, robotics, materials science, complex systems, or another deep-tech environment
โ€ข Experience in a regulated product environment
โ€ข Experience working on company-critical, board-level, investor-facing, or fundraising-critical milestones
โ€ข Experience working directly with founders, executives, scientists, and engineering leaders
โ€ข Prior experience in a seed-stage or high-growth startup
โ€ข Scientific or engineering background
Company:
Subsense is a neurotechnology company developing the first non-surgical, nanoparticle-based bidirectional brain-computer interface. Founded in 2022, the company is headquartered in Covina, USA, with a team of 11-50 employees. The company is currently Early Stage.
