Role Description
Avcom SMT is seeking a full-time Cable & Electromechanical Assembly Technician to support cable assembly, wire harness assembly, box-build, enclosure assembly, and related electronics manufacturing work at our Westerville, OH facility.

This role is responsible for assembling cables, wiring, connectors, harnesses, subassemblies, and electromechanical products using bills of materials, drawings, work instructions, customer documentation, and quality requirements. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with cable assembly, wire processing, crimping, soldering, mechanical assembly, electronics assembly, or a strong production background with the ability to learn quickly.

This position requires attention to detail, careful material verification, and the ability to follow documentation accurately. Avcom supports a mix of quick-turn prototype work, low-volume builds, and production manufacturing, so the right candidate should be comfortable working on varied assemblies and changing priorities.

Key Responsibilities

· Assemble cable assemblies, wire harnesses, connectors, enclosures, box-build assemblies, and electromechanical products according to work instructions, drawings, BOMs, and customer requirements.

· Cut, strip, crimp, solder, terminate, label, route, and secure wires and cables as required.

· Install connectors, terminals, hardware, fasteners, brackets, panels, printed circuit boards, and other mechanical or electrical components.

· Verify correct wire type, gauge, color, length, connector orientation, pinout, labels, part numbers, and assembly configuration before and during production.

· Read and follow bills of materials, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, travelers, process labels, and internal documentation.

· Perform basic inspection of cable assemblies, solder joints, crimps, connectors, hardware, labels, and workmanship.

· Assist with continuity checks, functional checks, or other basic test requirements as needed.

· Identify and communicate discrepancies in BOMs, drawings, wiring instructions, component markings, customer documentation, or assembly requirements to the Production Manager or designated lead.

· Support rework, modification, repair, and troubleshooting of assemblies as directed.

· Complete production documentation, tracking, labeling, and process records accurately.

· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

· Support other production areas, including PCB assembly, inspection, packing, or shipping, as needed.

· Work collaboratively with production, quality, engineering, and management personnel to meet customer deadlines and quality expectations.

Required Qualifications

· Previous experience in cable assembly, wire harness assembly, electronics assembly, electromechanical assembly, machine operation, or a similar hands-on manufacturing role.

· Ability to read and follow bills of materials, work instructions, assembly drawings, travelers, wiring diagrams, and production documentation.

· Strong attention to detail and ability to identify incorrect parts, wiring errors, pinout issues, labeling issues, solder defects, crimp defects, and workmanship concerns.

· Comfortable working with small components, wires, connectors, circuit boards, hand tools, and production documentation.

· Ability to follow standardized procedures and escalate issues when information is unclear or discrepancies are found.

· Basic computer skills for accessing work instructions, production documentation, and job information.

· Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, use hand tools, handle assemblies safely, and lift moderate weights as needed.

· Good communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented production environment.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience with cable assembly, wire harness assembly, connector assembly, or box-build/electromechanical assembly.

· Experience with wire stripping, crimping, soldering, continuity testing, labeling, harness routing, and connector pinning.

· Experience reading wiring diagrams, assembly drawings, schematics, or customer build documentation.

· Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-610, or similar workmanship standards.

· Experience with hand soldering, rework, inspection, or basic electronics troubleshooting.

· Experience in contract manufacturing, high-mix/low-volume production, prototype builds, industrial electronics, military/defense electronics, or test equipment assembly.

· Ability to train or assist other assemblers once fully qualified.

Important Quality Expectations
This role requires accuracy, patience, and good judgment. Avcom SMT builds customer-controlled assemblies where incorrect wiring, wrong components, poor crimps, solder defects, missing hardware, labeling errors, or undocumented changes can create serious quality issues. Employees are expected to stop and ask questions when something does not match the BOM, drawing, work instruction, wire label, component label, customer requirement, or company procedure.

Work Environment
This position is performed in a manufacturing environment and may require sitting or standing for extended periods, handling small components and wires, using hand tools, working around production equipment, and lifting trays, racks, boxes, or materials. Eye/hand coordination, good vision, color recognition, and attention to detail are important for success in this role.

Education
