Job description

Description
The Gardner Lab seeks a postdoctoral researcher for the 2026-27 academic year (9 months) in Ficus taxonomy and molecular systematics. The lab focuses on the systematics and chemical ecology of flowering plants, with a particular focus on the Moraceae family.
Responsibilities:
1. The postdoc's primary responsibility will be a project integrating phylogenomic and morphological data to develop a new infrageneric classification for figs. This will involve the analysis and interpretation of phylogenomic and morphological data in coordination with international collaborators, delimiting higher taxa within Ficus, and reviewing historical nomenclature to determine the proper application of taxonomic names for the new system.
2. In addition, the postdoc will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing phylogenetics projects in Ficus and to pursue and lead their own project within the fig-fig wasp system.
3. Participate in mentoring younger scientists (graduate students and undergraduates).
In compliance with the City of Cleveland's Pay Transparency Ordinance (effective October 27, 2025), the annual starting base salary range for this position is $55,000 - $62,652. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. Postdocs receive individual and family healthcare benefits, life insurance, and employee assistance.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
1. PhD in biology, botany, plant biology, or a related field.
2. Working knowledge of Ficus taxonomy and nomenclature.
3. Experience with the NGS workflow for DNA sequencing, including DNA extraction and sample preparation.
4. Competence in bioinformatic and phylogenomic analyses including sequence quality control, assembly, alignment, and phylogenetic inference.
5. Working knowledge of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants.
