Boom Operators also assist the production sound mixer by managing cables and using wireless microphones when needed. Their role is crucial in ensuring crisp, clear sound for a production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boom operator?

To thrive as a Boom Operator, you need excellent audio recording skills, a keen ear for sound quality, and a solid understanding of set etiquette, often supported by experience or a degree in audio production or film. Familiarity with boom microphones, audio recorders, wireless systems, and related sound equipment is essential, and certification in audio technology can be an asset. Boom Operators often face the challenge of capturing clean audio while avoiding shadows, staying out of camera shots, and minimizing noise from movement or the environment. Sets can be physically demanding, requiring long hours of standing, holding the boom mic in challenging positions, and adapting to rapidly changing filming conditions. Collaboration with the sound mixer and the rest of the crew is crucial to coordinate timing and ensure the best possible audio without disrupting the shooting schedule. These challenges make the role dynamic and require quick problem-solving skills as well as strong attention to detail.

Sellenriek Construction is hiring an experienced Vac Truck Operator to support underground utility construction crews.

We’re looking for someone who can independently operate a vac truck to expose underground utilities, support HDD and excavation crews, and safely work around active utility crossings. This position requires hands-on vac truck or hydro-vac experience in underground construction.

A valid Class A CDL is required for this position.

  • Use vacuum excavation to locate fiber, gas, electric, water, sewer, and telecom lines
  • Support HDD crews at utility crossings, entry pits, and exit pits
  • Safely position the truck, boom, hoses, and equipment on active jobsites
  • Adjust water pressure and excavation methods based on soil conditions and the utility being exposed
  • Monitor tank capacity and properly dispose of collected dirt, water, and debris
  • Read and follow utility markings, construction prints, bore plans, and jobsite layouts
  • Inspect hoses, tanks, pumps, water systems, and vacuum equipment before operation
  • Clean and maintain the truck and equipment at the end of each shift
  • Complete required vehicle and equipment inspection documentation
  • Assist with hand digging, spotting, traffic control, cleanup, and general labor duties when needed
  • Communicate clearly with foremen, drill operators, locators, inspectors, and crew members
  • Follow OSHA, DOT, damage-prevention, and company safety procedures

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

  • Valid Class A CDL required
  • Vac truck or hydro-vac operating experience required
  • Underground utility construction experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to operate the vac truck independently and safely
  • Experience potholing, daylighting, and exposing underground utilities
  • Understanding of water pressure, vacuum excavation, and safe digging procedures
  • Ability to safely work around congested or active utility areas
  • Experience operating the boom, hoses, water system, vacuum system, and debris tank
  • Ability to complete daily inspections, cleaning, and basic maintenance
  • Comfortable assisting with labor and general crew duties when needed
  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather and ground conditions
  • Reliable, safety-minded, and able to work as part of a field crew
