Job description

Overview:
The student employee is primarily responsible for maintaining bookstore merchandising and visual standards and inventory control practices. They will learn how to engage and provide excellent customer service to all guests. Occasionally will provide backup services to the other Auxiliary Services units such as the mailroom and print shop. This position is an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable experience in the operations of different business units with a focus on retail merchandising, inventory control, auditing, and customer service.

Hours available: 15-20 hours/week
Schedule Flexibility:
Summer hours are flexible. Fall & Spring hours are typically fixed based on student class schedule and availability. Some work during semester breaks and spring break is required to conduct inventories and prepare for the semester starts. A couple times a year may be required to work an evening event such as the bookstore pop-up shop at Oakton's graduation venue.

• Responsible for maintaining store presentation and merchandising standards and inventory control practices with minimal supervision.

• Perform daily restock of all items and ensure all items are fully stocked at all times.

• Conduct daily inventory audits and report findings to the bookstore manager

• Assist with receiving orders and checking stock deliveries for accuracy

• Identify slow moving items for remerchandising.

• Make promotional and sale event recommendations to store manager

• Provide input to store manager on apparel and general merchandise buying decisions.

• Collaborate with team on planning social media and email content.

• Assist with receiving and checking stock deliveries for accuracy

• Provide excellent customer service and cashiering duties

Candidate Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities or KSOAs)
Qualified candidates will have the following competencies and skills:
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 2.0 at time of hire or be first semester at Oakton College.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Be in good academic standing at Oakton.
  • Enrolled in at least six credit hours during fall and spring semester.
  • Must be proactive and able to work independently.
  • Basic computer knowledge such as email, Microsoft Word, Excel, Google docs, or ability to learn.
  • Ability to arrive on time for all scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly by phone, in person, and email.
  • Ability to maintain professional positive and courteous attitude when working with all customers and staff.
  • Ability to learn and operate cash registers.
  • Ability to learn and operate production printers.
  • Ability to occasionally use a step stool for setting up displays.
  • Ability to occasionally deliver packages throughout the campus.
  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 40lb.
